A serious software bug has been discovered in the driver's side automatic window protection system of the 2025 Tesla Model Y, according to an announcement from the Australian Department of Transport . This problem has led to a recall of 7,301 electric crossover vehicles.
"A software error may cause the automatic protection system to malfunction. As a result, the glass door may close with excessive force when it encounters an obstacle, such as a human body part," the agency said.
As described, this is a potentially high-risk technical defect. If a body part (such as a hand or neck) is caught in the window gap at the time it closes, the excessive closing force will significantly increase the risk of injury to the occupants.
Tesla took immediate action. The electric car company will contact owners of affected vehicles directly. Fortunately, the solution is extremely simple and does not require a visit to the factory. The entire problem will be handled via an over-the-air (OTA) software update.
This isn’t Tesla’s first recall related to this issue. In 2022, the company recalled nearly 1.1 million vehicles in the US, including the Model 3 and Model S, for a similar issue. Earlier this year, more than 46,000 Cybertrucks were also recalled due to a problem with body panels that could easily peel off.
