Egg prices rise again
The rebound in egg prices after a long period of rock bottom is good news for many farmers. Since last year, egg farms have been continuously losing money, even having to sell off their flocks. But in just the past week, egg prices have increased by 500 VND per egg, helping farmers to ease their burden and have more hope.
Mr. Quan's family has three chicken farms with a total flock of 50,000 chickens. On average, his family collects 30,000 eggs per day. Mr. Quan said that for a long time, his family and the surrounding farms have been struggling due to losses. Last year, the price of eggs was 1,500 - 1,700 VND/egg. This year, the news of fake eggs has brought the price down to only 1,200 - 1,400 VND/egg. Every day, his family loses 15 million VND. However, the price of eggs has now increased again, reducing his family's difficulties somewhat.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuan - Farm Manager said: "The information about fake eggs has been denied, so the price has increased to 1,800-1,900 VND in the past two or three days. Farmers are less miserable. Now it is easier to sell. Every day, I sell 150,000 to 20,000 eggs."
On a smaller scale, Mr. Thang’s family has 20,000 laying hens. On average, they produce 15,000 eggs per day. Like other households, Mr. Thang is excited because egg prices have started to improve again and consumption is more favorable than before. Every two days, he sells 15,000 – 20,000 eggs.
Mr. Tran Van Thang - Huong Dao Commune, Tam Duong, Vinh Phuc shared: "About a week ago, egg prices improved a bit. From 14 to today, egg prices have also increased to 18 - 19. After deducting all expenses and depreciation, it must be around 1,800 VND/egg to break even. From 1,800 VND or more, people will have a little profit".
Mr. Nguyen Huu Tuc - a trader in Hanoi commented: "The consumption market is stronger and more stable than before and more prosperous. Every day, 20,000 fruits are consumed, the same as before."
Mr. Nguyen Van Trong - Vice President of the Vietnam Association of Farms and Agricultural Enterprises commented: "Livestock farming must be considered as one's own profession, not when it increases it will be in the herd or when it is low it will be in the herd. According to the exploitation cycle of poultry, we continue to do it and consider it as a profession, then when it is expensive, when it is cheap, we still have products to supply to the market. When it is expensive, when it is cheap, they balance each other, for a long time there will be no loss."
According to the Vietnam Poultry Association, the reason for the increase in egg prices is partly due to the information about fake eggs being denied, making consumers feel secure about this product. Partly due to a long period of losses, unable to continue raising chickens, many farmers had to sell their chickens, so the supply is no longer as abundant as before.
Increased egg prices and favorable consumption are positive signals for farmers.
Sustainable livestock solutions
The increase in egg prices and favorable consumption are positive signals for livestock farmers. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, last year the country produced more than 20 billion eggs - far exceeding the target set for 2030. Supply exceeding demand, if not well controlled, will pose risks to the market. Therefore, the livestock industry needs to move towards linkages and chain production for stable and sustainable development.
Linked livestock farming, the unit operates along the value chain from farm to table. Proactive from the stage of producing animal feed; poultry breeds, raising and processing food. With a system of 19 farms, a total of 90,000 hens, in addition to linking with other farms, the unit always offers solutions to ensure prices for satellites.
Mr. Le Van Hai - General Director of Hai Thinh Nutrition Joint Stock Company commented: "Improving good quality food, helping livestock eat well, grow quickly, especially lay more eggs will reduce the cost of eggs. In addition, the company has an output guarantee of signing the dead price, supporting farmers to ensure the cost of eggs produced is guaranteed and farmers will make a profit. Going deep into measures to create a deep processing chain".
Raising chickens on a smaller scale, Mr. Kien in Chuong My chose his own path of raising egg-laying chickens with herbs. In addition to fermented dried beans and fresh rice bran, chicken feed also includes garlic, bitter leaves, bitter yellow, ginseng, Solanum procumbens, cooking oil... With the current selling price of 10,000 VND/fruit, the average monthly revenue is about 1.2 billion VND.
Mr. Phan Trung Kien - Director of Thang Long High-Tech Agriculture Joint Stock Company, Hanoi said: "We have an excess supply of both eggs and chickens. If we keep following the trend to achieve quantity, we will have no output. If there is output, the output and price will be very low and we will lose a lot. Now, instead of focusing on quantity, we focus on quality to serve the higher-end segment, creating a difference in our products, then we will get better results".
For sustainable livestock farming, the poultry industry needs to transform its development model from poultry farming to poultry economic development, from quantitative development to qualitative development, and increase added value.
