Iron ore futures on the Dalian Commodity Exchange fell on July 25 due to pressure from increased supply. On the Shanghai Futures Exchange, rebar and hot-rolled coil rose about 0.35%.
Steel prices on the exchange
Rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for May 2026 delivery rose 30 yuan to 3,392 yuan/t.
Iron ore futures on the Dalian Commodity Exchange fell on Thursday, pressured by increased supply from major miners such as Vale (Brazil) and Fortescue (Australia), along with rising steel inventories at Chinese mills.
The most-traded September iron ore contract on the Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) fell 0.55 percent to 811 yuan ($113.40) a tonne.
In contrast to the Chinese market, the benchmark iron ore price for August (SZZFQ5) on the Singapore exchange increased slightly by 0.44% to 104.9 USD/ton.
Signs of more abundant supply have weakened iron ore prices in the Dalian market, according to analysts at ANZ. Meanwhile, Vale reported a 3.7% year-on-year increase in second-quarter production, while Fortescue reported record fourth-quarter iron ore production, beating expectations on lower production costs.
In China, daily steel output from key enterprises rose 2.1% month-on-month, while steel inventories rose 3.9%, according to data from the China Iron and Steel Association.
In addition, China's steel billet exports from January to May hit a record 4.72 million tonnes, nearly equal to the total export volume for the whole of 2024, according to data from consultancy Mysteel.
Still, market sentiment remained positive this week, following news that China will resume construction of the world’s largest hydroelectric dam – a factor supporting domestic steel demand.
Other steelmaking raw materials on the DCE rose significantly, with metallurgical coal and coking coal (DCJcv1) prices up 7.97% and 1.97%, respectively.
China’s move to control excess coal output in key industrial hubs has raised expectations of a more severe supply-demand imbalance in the coming period, supporting positive market sentiment, Mysteel Global said.
On the Shanghai Futures Exchange, steel products recorded mixed fluctuations. Specifically, steel bars and hot-rolled coils increased by about 0.35%, while stainless steel decreased by 0.08% and steel wire (SWRcv1) decreased by 1.22%.
