Lao Cai: A bright spot in the "storm" of African swine fever, what is the secret?

Amid the devastating African swine fever that has swept through many provinces, Lao Cai province has emerged as an admirable success story. Despite the widespread spread of the disease, a series of large livestock farms have remained stable. The secret to this safety lies in the strict application of biosecurity measures.

According to the report of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment, the epidemic has affected nearly 2,000 livestock farming households, spread across nearly 400 villages and residential groups in 55 communes and wards. As a result, more than 13,000 pigs have died or had to be destroyed, with a total weight of more than 700 tons. This figure shows the terrible devastation of the epidemic in the province.

Faced with the tense situation, the government and functional agencies of Lao Cai province have taken drastic actions. The Department of Agriculture and Environment has established working groups to go directly to localities to direct the fight against the epidemic. More than 5,500 liters of disinfectants have been distributed to effectively carry out disinfection, sterilization and containment of the epidemic.

To prevent the spread, many quarantine checkpoints have been set up at the routes leading to the epidemic area. Here, vehicles passing through are carefully sprayed with disinfectant. In addition, pig slaughtering and transportation activities are also closely monitored to prevent the consumption of sick pigs, thereby minimizing the risk of spreading the disease to the community. These efforts have contributed to firmly protecting large farms, creating confidence for farmers across the country.
