Coffee price today August 17, 2025: Unbelievable rapid increase

Coffee prices have increased sharply mainly due to the gradual depletion of domestic supply. After a long harvest period, the amount of coffee left in households’ inventories is not much. Meanwhile, exporting enterprises still have to buy more to fulfill contracts, putting pressure on domestic purchasing prices to increase.

International speculators also contributed to the price increase as they became more cautious in trading futures for longer periods. This reduced the supply on the market, thereby pushing up futures and spot prices.

Limited supplies and adverse weather in Brazil are the main factors driving prices higher. Brazilian coffee exports in the first seven months of 2025 fell 23% year-on-year, raising concerns about shortages.

However, experts still advise caution because coffee prices often fluctuate unpredictably, influenced by many factors such as US tax policies and the global economic situation. Businesses and agents should consider carefully before making buying and selling decisions.

Last week, Robusta coffee prices recorded 4 strong increases, each exceeding the 3-digit threshold, with only 1 slight decrease. Summing up the whole week, Robusta coffee futures for November 2025 increased by 506 USD/ton, equivalent to 14.2%.

Arabica coffee prices also increased significantly, with the December 2025 contract increasing by 340 USD/ton to 7,370 USD/ton (about 192,100 VND/kg). Compared to last week, Arabica coffee prices increased by 700 USD/ton, equivalent to 10.5%.

Longer-term futures rose more than near-term futures, reflecting expectations of a coffee supply shortage even as Vietnam enters its October 2025 harvest. Coffee prices rose due to global import-export difficulties, including unclear tariffs and disruptions to shipping.

Adverse weather conditions such as frost in Brazil have raised supply concerns, while Vietnam is also tightening supplies ahead of the new crop. In addition, the Fed is expected to cut interest rates in September 2025, making many investors more aggressive due to the low cost of capital.
