The main reasons are the decline in global demand, large inventories and especially the lifting of the export ban by India. However, in the context of fluctuations, Vietnamese rice still maintains its advantage in the high-end segment thanks to a sustainable production strategy and conversion of specialty rice varieties.
In the first batch of low-emission green rice exported to Japan, the company not only signed a large production contract of 500 tons, but also sold it at a high price of 820 USD/ton for immediate delivery at the warehouse. This is a dream price, because it is 200 - 300 USD higher than regular rice products.
Mr. Pham Thai Binh - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Trung An Joint Stock Company shared: "The Prime Minister's approved project of 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice is to grow rice with high quality but reduce emissions. The rice industry is the pioneer, implementing 1 million hectares to reduce greenhouse gas emissions".
According to the Vietnam Food Association, although rice exports are facing a major problem of falling export prices, Vietnamese rice still maintains its market advantage, especially in the high-end segment. Fragrant specialty rice is priced 2-3 times higher than regular rice. In addition, having international certifications and the label "organic rice - reduced emissions" also helps Vietnamese rice access demanding markets such as the EU, Japan, and the US.
