Using lime powder to treat salinity to grow lotus in West Lake

TPO - To cover 7.5 hectares in June, from March 3, Tay Ho District People's Committee coordinated with the Fruit and Vegetable Research Institute and Hanoi Agricultural Extension Center to treat the lake and restore the pilot planting of West Lake lotus in 4 small lakes around West Lake.

In order to catch up with the June lotus crop, the Tay Ho District People's Committee has coordinated with the Fruit and Vegetable Research Institute and the Hanoi Agricultural Extension Center to simultaneously pump water from Dau Dong Lake and sprinkle lime to disinfect and clean the lake water. On March 3, the units pumped water to clean the Dau Dong Lake.

The Central Fruit and Vegetable Research Institute and the Hanoi Agricultural Extension Center provide lime, preparations, chemicals, etc. to treat water and improve lakes.

The propagation is carried out to prepare to provide seeds for 16 households in Tay Ho district to care for, harvest and preserve West Lake lotus.

With the soil having high humidity, experts will use about 1 ton of lime powder to treat the salinity in the lake area. After about 1 week, the lime-sprinkled soil will dry, the soil will be plowed, dried and treated with PM, mixed with organic fertilizer and planted.

The activity is part of the project "Building a model of lotus production associated with developing eco-tourism according to the value chain in Tay Ho - Hanoi" which was implemented from February 17 to November 15. It is expected that by April 2, lotus will be planted at Dau Dong Lake.

"The lotus varieties will be healthy varieties of Tay Ho, grown in pots and cared for and treated with a special regime. Through three times of seed control including selecting clean mother plants, healthy tubers, and removing diseased plants during cultivation to prevent spreading, the lotus will be used for propagation", Prof. Dr. Dang Van Dong - Deputy Director of the Institute of Vegetable and Fruit Research, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, went directly to the planting ponds to disseminate soil treatment methods for growing lotus.
A representative of the Tay Ho District People's Committee said that it is expected that in June, lotus will be covered on 7.5 hectares in the first phase, and in the next phase, lotus will be planted on an area of about 20 hectares in 18 small lakes around West Lake.

West Lake Lotus has been recognized as an intellectual property, this is a special type of lotus, with up to 100 petals.

Lotus products include flowers for tea, flowers for decoration and seeds for food associated with tourism development.

Vice Chairman of Tay Ho District People's Committee - Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tinh said that from 2018 to now, due to changes in weather, water quality... the lotus growing area (raw material for lotus tea brewing) has been narrowed. "The restoration and development of lotus growing is extremely necessary to create landscape around West Lake as well as develop lotus tea brewing as well as lotus-related products" - Mr. Tinh said.
