Don't create "shocks" for students.

Recently, as soon as the news that a series of universities suddenly dropped the C00 combination (Literature-History-Geography) was released, the student and parent community was "uproared".

Thousands of students, parents and teachers are in a state of confusion, disappointment and frustration because in just a few days, 12th graders will take the high school graduation exam, one of the most important exams in a student's life. Students' review for exams by block is a process of orientation that lasts for many years of study, related to interests, personal abilities and even family career orientation.

The C00 group has long been a familiar "land" for students with social inclinations, those who love literature, history, geography and wish to pursue careers such as journalism, pedagogy, law, culture, tourism ... The sudden removal of this group from the admission plan in the middle of the most important sprint, even if adjusted later, can cause consequences for the spirit, emotions and learning strategies of thousands of students.

In fact, this is not the first time that students have suffered psychological trauma from unexpected, inconsistent and uncleareducational policies. In recent years, as the entrance exam for grade 10 of public high schools in some cities approaches, students and parents have discussed the remaining subjects that have not been announced by the departments of education and training. They wait anxiously, sometimes "gambling" because they do not know if the subject they are better at will be selected for the exam or if the department will choose a subject that they do not have an advantage in when the final year of school is approaching the finish line.

During the 2020 High School Graduation Exam, when the national high school exam was renamed "high school graduation exam", there was also a debate about changing the goals and organization in such a short time, causing many students, especially rural students, to not have time to adapt. Every time the exam is approaching, public opinion has to face unexpected changes. Sadly, the ones who suffer the most are the students, who are at a sensitive age, under pressure from family, society and themselves, but do not have the right to decide, can only... adapt or "collapse".

There is no denying that education needs to innovate to keep up with the development of society and the need for new human resources. However, innovation cannot be a sudden, sharp turn. Any adjustment must have a long-term roadmap, be carefully researched, and be announced early. Every student needs a clear learning roadmap to determine goals, thereby preparing appropriate skills and knowledge. Changes without a roadmap, without early announcement, and without surveying the impact on students and teachers are manifestations of irresponsibility in policy making.

These “U-turns” not only disorient students but also erode their faith in the fairness of the education system, which should be a solid foundation for human development. In a learning society, any changes in education must aim at the sustainable development of learners. Exams are already stressful, and should not be a “gamble” with the future of tens of thousands of young people.
