According to many teachers in Ho Chi Minh City, the score distribution of the three subjects in the 10th grade entrance exam this year is skewed to the right, meaning that the majority of candidates scored from average to good.

In particular, the foreign language subject (mainly English) is no longer full of 10s like last year, the whole city only has 488 candidates who scored 10 instead of 1,707 exams last year, a decrease of 3 times. This year, the highest score achieved by a candidate is 7.25 with 3,143 students.

In Math, the highest score achieved by 4,580 candidates was 7. Compared to previous years, this year the percentage of candidates achieving above average scores in Math has increased sharply.

For Literature, the score range is from 6.75 to 7.25, almost the same as last year. The score with the most candidates achieving is 6.75 with 5,936 candidates.

Mr. Dinh Phu Cuong, Principal of Nguyen Van Luong Secondary School, District 6, predicted that the benchmark scores of top schools would increase by about 0.5 points or more compared to last year. This year, there will no longer be a specialized class model in regular schools, so the competition rate to enter these schools is higher than every year.

On the contrary, the benchmark for entering grade 10 at mid-level schools may decrease slightly. The reason is that this year's Math scores are positive, but on the contrary, English scores are lower than last year.

"The benchmark scores of schools will not differ much from previous years due to the small number of candidates taking the exam while the quota for public grade 10 is quite high, because the Department no longer applies the post-secondary career orientation quota like previous years," Mr. Cuong assessed.

Mr. Nguyen Dang Khoa, Vice Principal of Nguyen Huu Tri Secondary School, Binh Chanh District, predicted that the benchmark scores of top schools could increase from 0.25 to 0.75 points compared to last year.

The benchmark scores of middle-ranking schools can also increase by 0.25 points, these schools are likely to have benchmark scores of 15 points or more. The reason is that the scores are above the average of the 3 subjects.

Ms. Le Thi Thuy, Principal of Van Don Secondary School, District 4, said that this year, only 72% of students scored above 20 points. “Last year, the school had many students scoring 10 points in English, but this year, only 2 students scored perfect. The average score for English and Literature this year is not high, at the average level,” Ms. Thuy said. Therefore, the standard scores of schools may increase slightly by about 0.5 points.

Mr. Dang Huu Tri, Math teacher, Nguyen Du Secondary School, District 1, said that this level is about 0.5-1.5 in some highly competitive schools such as: Tran Dai Nghia Secondary - High School, Nguyen Thuong Hien High School, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, Gia Dinh, Nguyen Huu Huan, Tran Phu, Le Quy Don, Mac Dinh Chi, Bui Thi Xuan, Practical High School - Ho Chi Minh City University of Education.

"The schools in the middle will be stable, if they increase, it will be in the range of 0.25-0.5 points," said Mr. Tri.

The principal of a high school in District 1 said that based on the score distribution and enrollment targets of this year's schools, it can be said that the 10th grade benchmark will increase at top schools, at least by 1 point or more, leading to fluctuations in the benchmark scores at mid-ranked schools. "The reason is that most of the top schools this year did not increase their enrollment targets, the competition is high. Many students fall into the second choice, causing mid-ranked schools to also increase their benchmark scores by at least 0.25 points or more," he analyzed.

Teacher Tran Van Toan commented that the benchmark scores will not have many changes compared to the previous school year, and will not increase by a large margin, but are expected to increase by 0.25 points at top schools.
