iPhone 17 Pro series 'misses appointment' with exclusive screen technology

Apple is said to have encountered major production issues that have left the iPhone 17 Pro series without premium features.

According to WCCF Tech , Apple fans had hoped that the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max would be the company's first mobile devices to feature a proprietary anti-reflective, scratch-resistant screen coating, which would significantly improve outdoor visibility and catch up with rival Samsung. However, a recent report said that this plan was canceled because Apple faced serious problems in scaling up production.

iPhone 17 Pro series will not have anti-reflective screen technology

According to sources from MacRumors , the process of applying a new anti-reflective coating to the screens of the iPhone 17 Pro models is taking too long compared to the requirements. This negatively affects the overall yield, making it difficult to mass produce the millions of iPhones per year that Apple needs to meet. Therefore, the tech giant is said to have decided to remove this anticipated feature from the two upcoming flagship models.

The iPhone's anti-reflective screen is still far behind Samsung's

The lack of a premium anti-reflective coating could detract from the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max’s appeal, which is seen as a factor that encourages users to upgrade or buy the more expensive version. The current iPhone screen, despite having an oleophobic coating to prevent fingerprints, still reflects a lot of light compared to the screens of competitors like the Galaxy S25 Ultra.

Still, hope isn’t lost. If Apple can figure out how to optimize and shorten the anti-reflective coating process in the coming months, it could make it to the iPhone 18 next year. The report doesn’t say whether Apple is considering using Nano Texture Glass — an option that reduces reflectivity but isn’t as drastic as anti-reflective coating — for the iPhone 17 Pro.

So users hoping for a less glare-prone iPhone display will probably have to wait at least another year. This manufacturing issue is an unfortunate setback for Apple’s efforts to upgrade the display on this year’s Pro line.
