Kaspersky has proposed a practical and smart solution that users need to add for 2024: Protect personal data by cleaning up digital clutter.

Cleaning up your personal digital space makes the online environment safer.

Digital clutter is a result of the digital age, occurring as users of devices create digital documents and files at an uncontrollable rate.

Users install more apps than they actually use, rarely update them, and often fail to properly adjust their security/privacy settings. This means that digital waste is stored on devices or in the cloud forever. All of this creates “digital clutter.”

In addition, poor user maintenance of device content also creates digital clutter. Kaspersky data shows that 55% of users regularly edit the content on their devices and delete unused documents and applications. In 32% of cases, users occasionally organize their digital data, and 13% of users do not delete any documents and applications. A Kaspersky report shows that the top 5 data commonly stored on devices are regular photos and videos (90%), travel photos and videos , and personal emails (89% each), address/contact information (84%), and personal messages via SMS/IM (79%).

From the clutter in the digital space also comes cybersecurity incidents. From ransomware attacks to data leaks that compromise public data and personal financial information.

“I think we should start small until it becomes a habit. A few simple changes at the beginning will go a long way in protecting ourselves and our personal data,” said Yeo Siang Tiong, General Manager for Southeast Asia at Kaspersky.

Kaspersky also suggests that users should follow some of the following tips to ensure safety in the digital space in this new year: Apple, Google and Microsoft have all introduced the password-free login feature and users need to apply it, stay away from harmful social networks, limit surfing social networks... and separate personal life and work in the cyberspace...
