What Ukraine Will Do Regardless of Who Wins the US Presidential Election

Ukraine will find a way to resist Russian forces even if former US President Donald Trump wins the November election and threatens to cut off vital US aid to Kiev’s fighting efforts.

The statement was made by Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov on July 17 when he attended the annual Aspen Security Forum in Colorado, USA, online.

In carefully worded comments to an audience of American policymakers and journalists, Umerov reflected on the diplomatic and military difficulties facing Ukraine as Mr. Trump and his running mate JD Vance gain momentum in the race for the White House.

Mr. Vance, an Ohio senator, has fought in Congress to block US military and financial aid to Ukraine as it battles Russian forces and cross-border attacks.

Meanwhile, Mr. Trump has said he would end the war immediately if he wins in November. Mr. Trump, a Republican, has not said how he would do that.

Analysts say that could include ending US aid to Ukraine unless Kiev agrees to a ceasefire on Moscow's terms, including territorial concessions.

“We believe in the leadership of the United States and we believe that the United States also wants its partners and allies to be strong,” Umerov said. “At this stage, we will focus on the battlefield. Whatever the outcome of the US elections, we will find a solution.”

Minister Umerov, like Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the NATO summit in Washington DC last week, remained unclear about whether Ukraine would try to continue fighting or would agree to a ceasefire that would benefit Russia if the US withdrew its support.

While other members of the military alliance of European and North American countries have also helped provide weapons, money and other aid to Ukraine, Washington's support for Kiev since the Russia-Ukraine conflict erupted in February 2022 is the largest and would be difficult to replace if lost.

For now, Mr. Umerov stressed that Ukraine will continue to fight to regain lost territory.

Retaking the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which was controlled by the Russians early in the war, is "part of our goal," Ukraine's defense minister said.
