Proactive labor source for coffee harvesting

Dak Nong is entering the peak coffee harvest season. This season, Dak Nong has more than 131,000 hectares of coffee for harvest, with an output of about 350,000 tons.

Ms. Truong Thi Hanh, Nghia Trung ward, Gia Nghia city is excited because this coffee crop is both a good harvest and has a good price.

To help farmers harvest coffee in time for the season, about 2 months ago, the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs of Dak Nong conducted a review of the labor force serving coffee harvesting.

The Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs estimates that Dak Nong will need about 257,000 workers this coffee harvest season. The province's local labor force is estimated to only meet about 50%, the rest must be hired from other localities.

Mr. Hoang Viet Nam, Deputy Director of the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs of Dak Nong shared: Dak Nong has a large coffee area in the Central Highlands, so every year when the harvest season comes, it needs a large labor force. Every year, when the coffee harvest season comes, many families lack people to harvest, dry and process.

We review the labor that the province needs in this crop season so that people can grasp the situation and prepare for hiring workers. The initiative in labor resources of each household, cooperative, and company will contribute to timely harvesting, drying, and processing of coffee.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Toan, Director of Thinh Phat Agricultural Cooperative, Quang Son Commune, Dak Glong District, said that information from the Dak Nong Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs helped the Cooperative develop a thorough coffee harvesting plan.

The cooperative currently has over 200 members growing nearly 600 hectares of coffee. If the weather is favorable, each hectare of coffee needs about 10 workers to harvest for about 10 days, not including drying and processing. Excluding family labor, the cooperative needs about 200 workers to pick coffee for this crop.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Toan, Director of Thinh Phat Agricultural Cooperative, Quang Son Commune, Dak Glong District, said that this crop season, they have contacted a source of coffee picking workers.

Ms. Toan shared that in recent years, the locality has been in great need of coffee pickers. Because most young people work as factory workers. Faced with this situation, this year the cooperative has informed households to calculate and proactively provide workers for harvesting.

The cooperative contacted groups of workers in the North and West who had picked coffee in previous years and now returned. This source of workers has experience in picking, so productivity is high and branches are not damaged.

"If coffee is left to ripen too much, its quality will decrease. We also calculate that we can exchange labor to pick it on time, avoiding wasting labor while ensuring coffee quality," Ms. Toan shared.

Harvesting coffee properly

As early as October 2024, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dak Nong issued a document guiding the organization of coffee harvest for the 2024-2025 crop year.

Mr. Ngo Xuan Dong, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dak Nong, said that most farmers grow coffee and this is their main source of income. The coffee harvest determines the economic efficiency and the results of farmers' labor after a year of hard work.

“We have carefully instructed coffee harvesting techniques and hope that people will apply them to improve productivity, product quality, and sell at a good price,” Mr. Dong shared.

According to Mr. Dong, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has requested units and localities to organize synchronous solutions to guide and support farmers in harvesting coffee to ensure quality and achieve the highest efficiency.

In particular, it is necessary to propagate and guide farmers, cooperatives, cooperative groups, companies... producing coffee to know the best harvesting, processing and preservation techniques.

Ms. Truong Thi Hanh, Nghia Trung Ward, Gia Nghia City has more than 3 sao of coffee. Ms. Hanh said that this year, right from the beginning of the season, the price of coffee increased, so she was very excited.

Through information channels, she learned that when about 20-25% of the fruit in the garden is ripe, the first harvest is done, so she picks the first ripe tree. Up to now, she has picked and dried 300 kg of coffee.

"The professional agency advises people to focus on harvesting coffee quickly when the garden has a standard rate of ripe fruit. This is to create conditions for the coffee to bloom simultaneously in the next crop, so the family is focusing on harvesting," said Ms. Hanh.

Dak Nong Bazan Coffee Company has proactively prepared drying and curing stages to serve raw materials for processing specialty coffee.

Bazan Dak Nong Coffee Company, Gia Nghia City cooperates with farmers to grow 100 hectares of clean coffee to create a raw material area for processing high quality coffee.

Mr. Le Van Hoang, Director of the Company, said that the company has instructed farmers to pick coffee when the ripe fruit ratio reaches 80 - 100% to ensure the quality of raw materials.

The company buys coffee with a high rate of ripe fruit at a higher price, so people get a “double benefit” because the yield also increases by 10-20% compared to green and young picking. This season, coffee prices are high, so households focus on applying picking and drying techniques on racks and net houses to serve the processing of high-quality coffee.

Mr. Hoang said: "In previous years, the company prepared drying yards, drying racks, greenhouses, grinders, and roasters, so this season's harvest meets the needs well and is ready to serve coffee processing."

Dak Nong Department of Agriculture and Rural Development encourages farmers to harvest coffee when the fruit is ripe to achieve the best quality. People should not pick green, unripe fruit or overripe, dry and fallen fruit, which reduces the quality of the product. People should not pick the whole bunch of fruit, leaves and small branches to ensure the quality of the branches stored for the next crop.

Consume coffee properly

In 2024, the coffee market will have price fluctuations that will affect farmers' psychology in harvesting and consuming products. Authorities have provided guidance and information on domestic and world coffee output so that people can consume coffee appropriately and increase economic efficiency.

Many Dak Nong farmers have implemented the “4 no’s” policy to protect the value of their coffee and their hard work. That is, no green picking, no immature picking, no selling fresh, no consigning coffee.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoai, Nghia Trung Ward, Gia Nghia City, picks ripe coffee, dries it, and stores it at home, without consignment, and waits for a good price to sell to increase economic efficiency.

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoai, Nghia Trung Ward, Gia Nghia City, she regularly monitors market information and knows that this year the coffee output in the Central Highlands provinces has decreased, so they do not pick young coffee to increase quality.

Currently, many agents, companies and businesses in the market are purchasing fresh coffee at higher prices than in previous years. In fact, in the first days of the season, many places have purchased coffee at 26,000 - 27,000 VND/kg of fresh coffee.

However, with 20 years of experience in coffee production, she is in no hurry to sell fresh coffee. She picks ripe coffee, dries it, and only sells it when she needs money or when she waits for a good price.

Ms. Hanh shared: “In recent years, many farmers who consigned agricultural products were declared bankrupt by some agents and lost everything. From this experience, I no longer consign coffee.”

Recently, Dak Nong Farmers' Association has stepped up propaganda and education, guiding people on techniques for processing, drying, and preserving coffee after harvest according to the instructions of professional agencies.

Coffee storage must be dry to avoid mold and spoilage. Farmers do not store coffee with agricultural materials such as fertilizers, pesticides, etc. to preserve the best quality.

With 131,000 hectares for harvest, Dak Nong expects the total coffee output in the 2024-2025 crop year to reach 350,000 tons. The average coffee yield in the whole province is estimated at 2.6 tons/ha.

Dak Nong's coffee productivity in 2024 will decrease slightly compared to the same period last year. The reason is due to the impact of the heat wave and prolonged lack of irrigation water that occurred in the first months of 2024.

This is the time when coffee trees flower and bear fruit, causing some coffee gardens to have wilted leaves, dried flowers and young fruit, reducing productivity and output.

Strengthening coffee protection for people

Since the beginning of the crop season, authorities have increased security and protected farmers’ crops. Dak Nong Police and local authorities have implemented many solutions.

Dak Song is one of the districts with large coffee areas in Dak Nong. Dak Song District Police have advised the District Party Committee and the District People's Committee to direct departments, branches, and organizations to join hands with the people to maintain security and order and protect crops.

Police of all communes and towns of Dak Song commune advised local Party committees and authorities to organize conferences to disseminate and deploy plans to protect agricultural harvest season.

At the same time, the police force proactively reviewed and promptly detected signs of protection and price gouging of people and traders in coffee purchasing.

Dak Song district authorities patrol and control the area to protect coffee for the people.

Lieutenant Colonel Le Thua Nam, Chief of Thuan Hanh Commune Police, Dak Song District, said: The commune police have stepped up propaganda, managed the area well; managed subjects and seasonal workers from other localities. The commune police have coordinated with functional forces and 11 security and order protection teams at the grassroots level to strengthen patrols and closed-off control of the area to protect people's property.

In addition, Thuan Hanh Commune Police deployed to the owners of agricultural product purchasing establishments to sign a commitment not to purchase immature coffee, coffee that does not guarantee quality, or coffee of unknown origin.

The commune police mobilized owners of agricultural product purchasing establishments to actively detect and denounce suspicious subjects related to theft and consumption of stolen coffee.

Mr. Dang Cao Khang, Head of the Security and Order Protection Team of Thuan Binh Village, Thuan Hanh Commune, shared: “We regularly coordinate with the Thuan Hanh Commune Police and other functional forces to go to fields, fields, and houses to propagate to raise awareness of crime prevention and control. At the same time, we increase patrols and control of the area.”

Mr. Tran Quoc Cuong was visited by the police of Thuan Hanh commune, Dak Song district, to propagate to protect the coffee season.

Mr. Tran Quoc Cuong, Thuan Hanh commune shared: “With the propaganda, we clearly see the methods and tricks of all kinds of criminals so that we can work together to prevent and maintain security and order. In particular, the police force, border guards and grassroots security teams regularly patrol and control the fields, so we are assured to wait until the coffee is ripe before picking to improve product quality.”

The end of the year is the time when freelance workers gather in the Central Highlands provinces, including Dak Nong, to pick coffee. This labor force has contributed greatly to helping Dak Nong people harvest coffee on time.

However, this is also the time when criminals and fugitives from other localities blend into the crowd, pretending to be hired coffee harvesters to commit crimes.

Therefore, in addition to the drastic participation of all levels and sectors and the core role of the police force, each citizen needs to raise their vigilance.

Every person and every household needs to proactively protect their property as well as actively participate in the movement of the whole people to protect national security, detect and denounce crimes, and contribute to maintaining security and order at the grassroots level.
