In the northern mountainous provinces such as Ha Giang (formerly) and Tuyen Quang, agriculture is still the main livelihood of the majority of people, especially ethnic minority women. However, agricultural production in this area is facing many challenges. In particular, production techniques are limited and small-scale, most households still cultivate in traditional ways, relying heavily on personal experience and lacking access to new knowledge about sustainable, organic or circular farming. The uncontrolled use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides is degrading soil quality and negatively affecting human health.
Together, the impacts of climate change and resource degradation, lack of access to markets and technology, and barriers to women and their roles in agriculture mean that women are often seen as caregivers and rarely recognized or involved in decisions related to production and consumption. They also face significant barriers to accessing capital, technical training, and leadership opportunities in their communities.
Faced with this situation, the Tuyen Quang Women's Union in collaboration with CARE International in Vietnam and MEVI SIB Joint Stock Company organized the launching event of the project "Promoting green business models for women for sustainable Vietnamese agriculture" (We4Ag). The project is funded by the European Union (EU) and will be implemented from now until February 2028.
Representatives of the Tuyen Quang Provincial Women's Union and the Project implementing units signed a memorandum of understanding.
The project aims to enhance capacity and create conditions for women in agricultural production and business to develop in a green, sustainable direction and apply digital technology. Implemented in 4 communes: Vi Xuyen, Linh Ho, Tan Quang and Vinh Tuy, Tuyen Quang province, the project focuses on 3 main groups of activities.
These include: improving sustainable agricultural production capacity for 1,500 women through direct and online training on green, circular, organic and emission-reducing agricultural production methods; promoting the application of digital technology for 1,200 women to contribute to reducing waste in production and processing, while increasing the value of agricultural products. At the same time, expanding market access opportunities for 300 women through supporting the construction of online booths and connecting women with agricultural product distribution channels, both inside and outside the province.
Mr. Gonzalo Serrano de la Rosa, Deputy Head of Cooperation Section of the European Union Delegation to Vietnam, shared about the significance of the project.
