As one of the key fishing ports in the Northeast region of Quang Ninh province, Van Gia fishing port, Tra Co ward, Mong Cai city, is being invested in upgrading to meet the needs of offshore fishing development and modern fishing logistics services. The Van Gia fishing port upgrading project is designed to simultaneously serve offshore fishing vessels with a capacity of 400CV or more, operating in the Gulf of Tonkin. In addition, the project also focuses on developing fishing logistics services such as: refueling, providing food, fresh water, ice, equipment and seafood processing, promptly meeting the production and consumption needs of fishermen.
An important highlight of the project is the construction of a system to control and trace the origin of exploited aquatic products, effectively contributing to the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. Van Gia fishing port holds an important gateway position in receiving aquatic products from the northern fishing grounds, especially the sea bordering China, where hundreds of fishing vessels from Quang Ninh province and neighboring provinces have traditional fishing activities.
The project will upgrade and expand the length of the wharf to increase the capacity to receive large-tonnage ships; build an operating house with a quarantine, classification and preservation system for aquatic products; upgrade technical infrastructure such as ship parking, electricity supply, water supply and environmental treatment; and connect with the inter-regional transport system, especially the Van Ninh - Bac Luan general seaport cluster, contributing to the formation of a seafood logistics chain linked to exports.
According to the representative of the Project Management Board, the implementation of technical infrastructure is being actively carried out with the goal of basic completion by 2026. When completed, Van Gia fishing port will play an important role in increasing the capacity to receive and consume offshore seafood, reducing the load on the southern fishing ports of the province such as Cai Rong and Ha Long, while expanding the consumption of seafood products to the Chinese market through Mong Cai border gates, creating a driving force for sustainable development for the local seafood industry.
According to Decision No. 582/QD-TTg dated July 3, 2024 of the Prime Minister , Quang Ninh currently has 11 storm shelters for fishing vessels, including 2 regional-level fishing port-combined anchorages and 9 provincial-level storm shelters. Up to now, the province has had 5 storm shelters for fishing vessels that are qualified to operate with a capacity of 1,713 fishing vessels, including: Regional-level anchorage area in Cai Rong port area (Van Don district) with a capacity of 1,000 vessels; 4 provincial-level anchorages including: Tien Toi storm shelter area (Duong Hoa commune, Hai Ha district) with a capacity of 150 vessels; Cam Thuy storm shelter area (Cam Pha city) with a capacity of 200 vessels; Vung Su, Thoi Day storm shelter area (Tan Lap commune, Dam Ha district) with a capacity of 81 vessels; The Tien Yen district storm shelter anchorage area has a capacity of 282 ships. The remaining 6 anchorage areas in the planning are located in Co To town (Co To district); Cai Mat estuary (Tien Lang commune, Tien Yen district); Ha Phong ward (Ha Long city); Quang Ha - Phu Hai (Quang Ha town and Phu Hai commune, Hai Ha district); Vinh Trung (Vinh Trung commune, Mong Cai city); O Lon Bay (Minh Chau commune, Van Don district).
By the end of the second quarter of 2025, the total investment capital for fisheries infrastructure in the province will reach over 1,500 billion VND, mainly from the central budget with targeted support, the provincial budget, ODA capital and socialization. In addition, the province has completed the planning map of the storm shelter anchorage system for fishing vessels until 2030, ensuring safety for the entire fleet in the area, with more than 7,800 fishing vessels in operation.
Mr. Nguyen Minh Son, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, said: Fishing ports and fishing wharves not only serve as storm shelters but are also an important link in the formation of the province's seafood value chain and a strategic solution in combating IUU fishing. In the coming time, the Department will focus on implementing key tasks such as: Completing the main items of ongoing projects, especially in key areas such as Co To, Mong Cai, Van Don, Dam Ha - Hai Ha; strengthening inspection and supervision of construction progress and quality, promptly removing difficulties and obstacles in projects; closely coordinating with local authorities and departments and branches to accelerate detailed planning of anchorage areas, ensuring linkage with urban development and coastal traffic planning; organizing reviews and assessments of the actual needs of fishermen to arrange and phase investment reasonably; At the same time, we promote the socialization of logistics services at fishing ports... We aim to basically complete the storm shelter and synchronous anchorage infrastructure network by 2026, creating conditions for fishermen to confidently stay at sea and develop a sustainable marine economy .
