According to the Washington Post , Mr. Trump - the Republican presidential candidate is considering options to launch a new large-scale economic attack on China if he returns to the White House, which could lead to a global trade war.

Experts say such a move could lead to huge disruption to both the US and global economies, far more severe than the impact of the trade war during Mr Trump's first term.

The US currently imposes a 25% tax on $300 billion worth of Chinese imports.

Relations between Washington and Beijing have deteriorated significantly under the Trump administration, which launched a trade war with China.

Under incumbent US President Joe Biden, the situation has not improved due to a number of events, including then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan (China) and the destruction of a Chinese balloon in US airspace, leading to a new round of diplomatic confrontation.

The Biden administration has recently taken some steps to normalize relations, with senior US and Chinese officials holding several meetings, but has yet to restore full relations between Washington and Beijing.
