Sookmyung Women's University announced on June 24 that it had revoked the master's degree of former South Korean First Lady Kim Keon Hee after concluding that she plagiarized her thesis. Sookmyung University reportedly launched an investigation into the plagiarism allegations against Kim in mid-December 2022.
After a period of review, a committee of the school's Graduate Schoolof Education decided to revoke Ms. Kim's master's degree in order to "establish research ethics and enhance academic reputation."

Ms. Kim Keon Hee, wife of former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, received her master's degree from the university based on her thesis submitted in 1999.
Immediately after Sookmyung University's announcement, Kookmin University also announced that it had begun procedures to revoke Ms. Kim's doctorate.
Kookmin University cited the Higher Education Act which stipulates that the qualification for admission to the doctoral program is a master's degree and if the master's degree submitted for admission to the doctoral program is revoked, the applicant will be disqualified from the doctoral program.
Ms. Kim Keon Hee was born in 1972 and married Mr. Yoon Suk Yeol in 2012. She became the First Lady of South Korea after Mr. Yoon was elected President in 2022.
However, on April 4, 2025, the Constitutional Court of South Korea ruled to remove President Yoon Suk Yeol from office for declaring martial law in December 2024.
