Focus on floating and don't lose your strength.

Don't Panic

The first thing to remember is not to panic, says Ms. Bigney, who teaches at the Boulder Outdoor Survival School.

She explains: When you fall into water, you are vulnerable to lung damage because you are hyperventilating. The instinct when you are scared is to gasp for air, and doing so will draw water into your lungs. Staying calm is important, she says, because panic is “the biggest thing that will kill you in a survival situation.”

Find anything floating in the sea to hold on to.

When in water, the next priority is to float. Some people may be more buoyant than others, depending on their body fat percentage and muscle mass.

Professor Mike Tipton, an expert in ocean survival at the University of Portsmouth, UK, advises focusing on staying afloat and not getting exhausted.

According to expert Bigney, a combination of floating, kicking and swimming is ideal to avoid wasting energy. Kick in bursts, not continuously. Taking off your clothes also helps you float.

Look for something floating in the sea and hold on to it, even a small floating object will help, expert Bigney advised, according to Insider .

Staying hydrated is important.

Dehydration would be a much bigger concern than food, as humans are capable of going without food for long periods, Ms Bigney said.

Try to get rainwater if available, by all means. However, do not drink sea water, and try to stay hydrated. You can cover your head with clothes to protect it from the sun.

Transmit signals by any means, including spam

With limited time to survive underwater, it is important to be rescued as soon as possible. Signal to be seen.

Gathering floating trash into large piles is likely to create an attention-grabbing signal, so do whatever you can to increase your chances of being spotted, according to Insider .

Keep up the spirit

To survive, you also need to keep a positive spirit and resilience.

The will to survive is very important. If you think "I'm going to die", your mentality will change. On the other hand, deciding to tell yourself "I'm not going to die today" can help you stand a chance, according to abc.net.au.
