"Tricks" of Vietnamese enterprises to conquer the global technology market

Grasping the strengths of a business is an important factor in “bringing the bell to strike foreign lands”. Over the years, while quietly carrying out the task of technological diplomacy, Vietnamese businesses have always had their own “tricks” to conquer world markets.

Go Global Enterprise with "heart" and "trust"

Sharing about the unique strength of Vietnamese technology when entering the global market, according to Mr. Nguyen Van Khoa, General Director of FPT Corporation, it is the people. “The bravery of Vietnamese people abroad is “never giving up halfway”. Vietnamese people always find ways to accompany and stand side by side with customers to overcome difficulties. Therefore, when cooperating, customers often stick together for a long time, seeing each other as “family members”, Mr. Khoa shared.

Mr. Khoa also said that Vietnamese people are very modest, they only accept 6-7 out of 10 parts. This modesty helps the work results often exceed customers' expectations.

An important point that Mr. Khoa believes that Vietnamese people always gain the trust of their partners is when projects have problems, delays or requirements outside the contract. Vietnamese people often support as much as possible, not turning around to force customers to pay more costs. In case too many resources arise, Vietnamese businesses and customers will sit down together to negotiate a harmonious solution that is most beneficial for both parties.

“When stepping out into the world , each enterprise not only carries its own name, but also carries the image of Vietnam. If it does not do things properly, customers and partners will think that Vietnamese enterprises lack credibility and thus no one will cooperate. Therefore, credibility is the most important thing and directly affects the image of the national brand. Over the past 37 years, FPT has always put credibility first. There are contracts where we accept losses, but we never lose credibility with customers and partners. That is the survival principle when Vietnamese enterprises step out into the world. And I believe that if all Vietnamese enterprises maintain their credibility and make efforts, Vietnam's position in the international arena will be increasingly consolidated,” Mr. Khoa emphasized.

From FPT’s experience, Mr. Khoa said he clearly saw the value that technology diplomacy brings. A typical example is Airbus. FPT started its relationship with Airbus at the World Economic Forum in 2017, which brings together leaders of governments, businesses, scholars and leading international organizations to discuss and shape global development trends.

From a meeting, FPT gradually became a global strategic partner of Airbus. Last May, at the Vietnam-France Business Forum in Paris, witnessed by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, FPT and Airbus signed a multi-year Master Service Agreement.

This agreement enables FPT to further participate in Airbus' global IT projects in key areas such as customer service, big data and cloud software development.

"For FPT, global aspirations are always closely linked to Vietnamese roots. We have implemented many initiatives to bring "Make in Vietnam" technology to the world. One of the typical "Make in Vietnam" products is FPT.AI - an artificial intelligence platform developed by Vietnamese engineers, serving tens of millions of users in 15 countries, with hundreds of millions of interactions each month," Mr. Khoa proudly said.

With a global technology business group like Viettel, over the past 15 years, in any market Viettel has been present in, Viettel has tried to build trust with sincerity, focusing on the interests of local people. That is the reason why many national leaders, such as the President of Timor-Leste or the Minister of Communications of Burundi, have affirmed that Viettel's presence brings positive changes and consider Viettel a strategic partner in digital technology.

According to Viettel's representative, these assessments are not only recognition for Viettel, but also proof of the capacity and reputation of Vietnamese enterprises on the global technology map.

“It can be said that each Viettel technology product deployed abroad carries the image of a dynamic, creative and friendly Vietnam. That is how we contribute to shaping a new look for the world telecommunications map, while affirming Viettel's role in the mission of unlocking technology diplomacy with a sincere heart,” Viettel representative expressed and emphasized: “What helps Viettel to be accepted abroad is not only technology, but also people. We always come with a spirit of learning, ready to listen and truly accompany customers. That is what makes the difference of Vietnamese solutions in the eyes of international friends.”

Entering a new phase, Viettel seeks new growth space from high technology. “Viettel must pioneer in linking high-tech products with national brands,” affirmed Major General Nguyen Dinh Chien, Deputy General Director and Party Secretary of the Group, adding: This is also the spirit of Resolution 59-NQ/TW on International Integration in the New Breakthrough Situation, issued in early 2025, identifying integration as a strategic driving force for Vietnam to enter a new era. Accordingly, leading enterprises have the task of integration to strengthen strategic partnerships and bring Vietnam deeper into the global value chain.

Extended arms in technology diplomacy

Resolution 57 of the Politburo on the development of high-tech industry and digital economy in the 2025–2035 period, with a vision to 2045, aims to turn Vietnam into a regional innovation center, boost the export of high-tech products and form a modern digital ecosystem. To realize this goal, there needs to be synchronous coordination between domestic and international levels.

Implementing Resolution 57, Embassies not only “lead the way” but also have the responsibility to truly “accompany” businesses in every step of development, linking the interests of businesses with the effectiveness of bilateral relations and national prestige.

According to Vietnamese Ambassador to Mozambique Tran Thi Thu Thin, in the spirit of thoroughly implementing Resolution 57 of the Politburo on promoting the pioneering role of foreign affairs in economic development, the Vietnamese Embassy in Mozambique identifies the task of building and strengthening trust and friendship between the two countries on all channels as a key task, considering this a "strategic asset" of diplomacy.

Ambassador Tran Thi Thu Thin recommended that Vietnam should identify that businesses investing in remote and difficult areas such as African countries means high risks and long-term commitments. Therefore, the Government and ministries and sectors need to build a long-term, strategic support mechanism.

“In addition to improving the approval and licensing process, it is necessary to study the application of risk insurance tools and credit incentives, and actively negotiate and sign investment protection and double taxation avoidance agreements with African countries. These are practical measures to protect interests and encourage businesses to confidently invest in the long term,” Ambassador Tran Thi Thu Thin shared.

Bringing Vietnamese high-tech products to the US market is a strategic goal set by Resolution 57. However, this is a market with strict technical standards and high quality requirements. Mr. Hoang Anh Tuan, Consul General of Vietnam in San Francisco, said that the consulate has been supporting businesses by organizing product introduction programs, specialized fairs and connecting directly with distribution chains and large suppliers. Notable products include software, AI solutions, IoT devices and semiconductor chips.

Thanks to this support, a number of Vietnamese enterprises have had initial success in signing cooperation contracts and establishing a presence in the US market. This not only expands the market for Vietnam’s high-tech products but also contributes to increasing the added value of the economy, in line with the “intellectual export” goal of Resolution 57.

Technology businesses need to train high-quality human resources.

In the context of fierce global technology competition, Resolution 57 is the guiding principle for Vietnam to develop the digital economy and high technology. The Vietnamese Consulate in San Francisco, as the center of Vietnam's technology diplomacy in the US, affirms its position as a "smart bridge" between Vietnam and the global innovation ecosystem.

Thanks to its strategic location in the global innovation hub – where the world’s leading technology corporations converge, Mr. Hoang Anh Tuan, Consul General of Vietnam in San Francisco, USA, shared that to develop the digital economy, Vietnam needs to master technology standards, protect intellectual property and build international brands. “The Consulate General always accompanies Vietnamese businesses in the negotiation process, provides market information, supports the resolution of legal and commercial problems, contributes to minimizing risks and enhancing competitiveness,” Consul General Hoang Anh Tuan shared.

Accordingly, from promoting cooperation, connecting businesses, supporting the export of high-tech products, to mobilizing overseas intellectuals and positioning the national brand, the Consulate General not only performs traditional diplomatic tasks but also becomes an agent promoting the country's digital transformation.

Mr. Hoang Anh Tuan emphasized that Resolution 57 clearly defines the task of positioning Vietnam as an innovative technology nation. Over the years, through participating in and supporting global technology events on AI, digital economy, and digital transformation, the Consulate General has contributed to affirming Vietnam's technology vision, building trust with international technology corporations.

“Communicating the message “Vietnam – A Rising Tech Nation” on social media platforms and at major technology conferences in the US has helped Vietnam become an attractive destination on the global technology investment map. This is the sustainable added value that technology diplomacy brings,” Mr. Hoang Anh Tuan shared.

He affirmed that with a strategic vision and flexible approach, the Consulate will continue to accompany Vietnam in its journey to realize the goal of becoming a regional technology and innovation center by 2045.

In the most demanding market like Japan, according to Mr. Pham Quang Hieu, Vietnamese Embassy in Japan, in the next 5-10 years, technology diplomacy will help Vietnam to seek, promote cooperation, and apply Japanese technology suitable to Vietnam's level of reception, such as technology in the fields of processing, mechanics-manufacturing, application of automation-robotics and AI technology to increase productivity and product quality in industrial factories, improve the capacity to develop and master, and be autonomous in technology of basic industries, contributing to the sustainable development of the country's economy.

At the same time, technology diplomacy creates fundamental conditions for the two countries to support and complement each other in accessing current and future strategic technologies such as semiconductors, quantum, new energy, etc.

“Vietnam has a young, dynamic human resource capable of accessing strategic technologies, in which many Vietnamese scientists have held important positions such as Professor, Associate Professor, and Head of Research Lab in leading training institutions and enterprises in Japan.

These scientists not only work with their Japanese colleagues to promote research and development of strategic technologies, but also play an important bridging role in promoting technological diplomacy and promoting cooperation in training high-quality human resources in strategic technologies that the two countries are focusing on," said Ambassador Pham Quang Hieu.

However, Ambassador Hieu also said that penetrating the high-tech market in a developed country like Japan is difficult and maintaining and developing it will increasingly face many difficulties and high competition.

“To achieve success, past experience shows that technology businesses need to prepare necessary conditions such as high-quality human resources, understanding of Japanese business culture and proficiency in Japanese - a prerequisite for expansion in Japan because Japanese customers do not often use English in domestic business. In addition, there needs to be solidarity and a shared vision among businesses in the same industry, avoiding fragmented operations and competing for customers in inappropriate ways,” said the Ambassador.

In addition, the organization into a specialized Association also creates conditions for ministries, branches and embassies to have the opportunity to officially and effectively support the Association and its members to connect and promote business in Japan.

In the technology diplomacy strategy, the role of Associations is very important. The Vietnam Software and IT Services Association (VINASA) currently has more than 600 members. These members not only contribute more than 70% of the total revenue of the Vietnamese software and IT services industry but are also an extension of Vietnam's "technology diplomacy". VINASA is the bridge between the government and businesses, between policy and implementation, between criticism and construction.

In 2024, VINASA will organize 4 key exhibition conferences, demonstrating 226 digital transformation solutions, attracting nearly 9,000 visitors including the government, businesses and international partners, along with nearly 500 1:1 Business Matching sessions. In addition, VINASA will continue to expand its international cooperation network, connecting Vietnamese businesses with the global market with 16 international business delegations, supporting more than 400 businesses to expand cooperation in key markets such as the US, Japan, Korea, Europe, Taiwan (China), UK, Singapore....

At the end of May 2025, VINASA hosted the Vietnam-Asia Digital Transformation Summit, gathering more than 2,500 delegates from 16 countries. These are clear evidence of the organization's international influence and initiative in technology diplomacy.

However, to deepen technological diplomacy, Chairman of VINASA Association and General Director of FPT Nguyen Van Khoa said that the element of people's diplomacy is still very important. Going abroad, each enterprise needs to bring national pride and Vietnamese spirit, while overcoming its inherent weakness: not yet becoming a strong community. When united, Vietnamese enterprises can create collective strength, thereby enhancing their position and competitiveness in the international arena.
