This achievement partly affirms the position of Vietnamese sepak takraw, while also bringing positive effects in the preparation process for the 33rd SEA Games and further, the 20th ASIAD in 2026.

Proud achievement

The 2025 Sepak Takraw World Championship (King's Cup 2025) attracts many strong teams in the region and continent such as Thailand, Japan, India... The Vietnamese Sepak Takraw team participates with 23 athletes, including prominent names such as Tran Thi Ngoc Yen, Nguyen Thi Yen, Nguyen Thi My, Nguyen Thi Ngoc Huyen...

Vietnamese athletes competed hard and won the right to enter 5 finals in the following events: 4-person women's team, 4-person men's team, Regu women's team, Hoop men's and Hoop women's.

In the end, the team won 1 Gold Medal (4-person female team), 2 Silver Medals (4-person male team, Regu female team) and 2 Bronze Medals (Hoop male, Hoop female). Compared to last year's achievements (3 Silver Medals and 2 Bronze Medals), this is a big and obvious step forward.

In particular, in the women's 4-person team event, the Vietnamese team created a miracle when they made a spectacular comeback to defeat the host team Thailand to win the championship. After falling behind, the Vietnamese girls rose up strongly with a series of beautiful flying hooks, winning the final match 2-1.

Coach of the Vietnamese women's sepak takraw team Hoang Thai Xuan shared: "This achievement is not only the result of serious training but also a testament to the talent, bravery and courageous fighting spirit of the athletes."

In the final match, main striker Tran Thi Ngoc Yen played brilliantly, helping her team win 15-8 in the second set. Entering the deciding set, despite being down 2-5, the Vietnamese girls scored 7 consecutive points, leading 9-5 and ending the set with a score of 15-7.

This is also the second time this year that the Vietnamese women's team has defeated Thailand in this event. Previously, at the 2025 World Cup (organized by the International Sepak Takraw Federation - ISTAF) held in March in India, Vietnam also won 2-1 against Thailand, winning the championship for the first time in this tournament.

Head coach of the Vietnamese Sepak Takraw team, Tran Thi Vui, commented: “This year’s World Championship brings together many strong athletes, especially from India, Japan and Thailand. The fact that we beat Thailand on away ground is of special professional significance.”

Through the tournament, the coaching staff also discovered many promising young faces such as Nguyen Khanh Ly, Huynh Quyen, Doi Hai Tien, Nguyen Thi My (born in 2007-2008). These are athletes who can succeed their seniors in the national team.

Aiming for a further goal

Sports expert Nguyen Hong Minh commented that the consecutive gold medals at the World Championships and World Cups are a good sign, but not enough to confirm that Vietnamese sepak takraw has reached the top group in Southeast Asia or Asia. Currently, we have only surpassed Thailand in the women's 4-person team event.

“If Vietnam cannot regularly defeat the Thai team in the main events, it will be difficult for Vietnam to achieve high results in major arenas such as the SEA Games or ASIAD. To develop sustainably, Vietnamese sepak takraw needs to invest heavily in young players, send them to training and compete internationally to gain experience,” Mr. Nguyen Hong Minh emphasized.

Coach of the Vietnamese women's sepak takraw team Hoang Thai Xuan said that the coaching staff is developing an international training plan for the team, including plans to participate in two important tournaments in India (September 2025) and South Korea (October 2025). This will be a valuable opportunity for young athletes to gain experience before entering the 33rd SEA Games.

Head of Sepak Takraw Department (Vietnam Sports Administration, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism ) Le Thanh Son said: "Sepak Takraw is currently identified as a key sport to invest in towards Gold Medals at SEA Games and ASIAD".

Therefore, the team was given the opportunity to concentrate with a larger force (16 athletes instead of 12 athletes as before). This helps the coaching staff have more options and opportunities to discover new factors. The Sports Department has assigned the target for the women's sepak takraw team to win the Gold Medal at the 33rd SEA Games in 2025 and the 20th ASIAD in 2026.

“From now until 2026, many players of the Vietnamese sepak takraw team are still at the peak of their careers and expertise. Therefore, we expect the team to achieve positive results in upcoming international competitions,” said Mr. Le Thanh Son.

Supporting the team, Head of the High Performance Sports Department (Vietnam Sports Administration, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) Hoang Quoc Vinh said that the Department provides maximum support to athletes training in the national team in terms of nutrition and training and competition equipment. Hopefully, with the synchronous implementation of the above solutions, Vietnamese sepak takraw will achieve more high achievements, making its mark on the international and regional arenas in the near future, first of all at the 33rd SEA Games-2025 held in Thailand.
