| Fake tax agency app asks for access to sensitive data on phone. |
According to the Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention, Hanoi City Police, recently, fake applications of tax authorities have appeared to steal users' personal information in order to appropriate property.
If users install fake software and applications from the tax authority, they risk having their phones hijacked. Messages and calls to the victim's phone will be controlled by the fake application, secretly transferred to the scammer's server, but not displayed on the victim's phone.
Once in control, bad guys can remotely control the victim's mobile phone or computer to unlock the device, compose and send SMS messages, turn the Internet on and off, access WiFi, record contacts, read call history, make calls, etc.
More dangerously, bad guys can also recover account passwords themselves, register for Internet Banking and Smart Banking services, change the transaction limit of the bank account, and then steal money from the victim's account. In particular, OTP code authentication messages for money transfers are hidden by spyware and sent to scammers without the victim knowing.
In addition to fake applications, bad guys also use achievements of artificial intelligence technology such as deepfake, deep voice, etc., to create fake videos of tax officials to commit fraud.
In the context of complicated cybercrime, Hanoi City Police recommends that people absolutely should not download or install tax agency applications through unofficial links sent via text messages, emails, etc.
In case users receive messages on social networking platforms and unusual calls, showing signs of fraud, please report to the police to prevent and handle according to the provisions of law.
