The Prime Minister has just issued Decision 648/QD-TTg dated June 7, 2023 approving the master plan for the development of the national airport and seaport system for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050, accordingly, Lien Khuong airport is an international airport welcoming 5 million passengers/year.

By 2030, Lien Khuong Airport will be an international airport welcoming 5 million passengers/year.

Specifically, the national airport system planning for the period 2021 - 2030 follows the hub-spoke model with 2 main hubs in the capital area of Hanoi and the Ho Chi Minh City area, forming 30 airports, of which 14 are international airports: Van Don, Cat Bi, Noi Bai, Tho Xuan, Vinh, Phu Bai, Da Nang, Chu Lai, Cam Ranh, Lien Khuong, Long Thanh, Tan Son Nhat, Can Tho and Phu Quoc.

Besides, there are 16 domestic airports: Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Sa Pa, Na San, Dong Hoi, Quang Tri, Phu Cat, Tuy Hoa, Pleiku, Buon Ma Thuot, Phan Thiet, Rach Gia, Ca Mau , Con Dao, Thanh Son and Bien Hoa (Thanh Son airport and Bien Hoa airport are planned to become dual-use airports).

Lien Khuong International Airport will have a scale of a level 4E airport, with an expected design capacity of about 5 million passengers/year, an area of 340.84 hectares, with an investment cost of about 4,591 billion VND. By 2050, Lien Khuong International Airport will have a scale of a level 4E airport, with an expected design capacity of about 7 million passengers/year, an area of 486.84 hectares, with an additional investment cost of about 3,157 billion VND.

In the period up to 2030, Lien Khuong International Airport will build a T2 passenger terminal with a capacity of 3 million passengers/year to the east of the existing T1 passenger terminal. Both T1 and T2 terminals will be operated simultaneously with a total capacity of 5 million passengers/year. By 2050, Lien Khuong International Airport will expand the T2 passenger terminal to a capacity of 5 million passengers/year; both T1 and T2 terminals will be operated simultaneously with a total capacity of 7 million passengers/year.

By 2050, Lien Khuong International Airport is expected to welcome 7 million passengers.

Decision 648/QD-TTg clearly states that resources should be focused on investing in a number of important airports, playing a key role, having a spillover effect and strong impact on economic and social development and international integration; mobilizing all resources to invest in developing aviation infrastructure; ensuring the harmony of interests of the State, people and businesses.
