At their peak around 3,600 years ago, the Cretan-Minoans established themselves as a powerful maritime force in the eastern Mediterranean, fostering extensive trade networks. These maritime trade routes connected the Cretan-Minoans with Egypt, the Levant (modern-day Syria, Lebanon and Israel), Anatolia (modern-day Turkey), Cyprus and mainland Greece. Crete-Minoan trade included a wide range of goods, primarily metals. Copper, essential for bronze production, was imported mainly from Cyprus, while tin came from as far away as modern-day Afghanistan or Cornwall in England. The Crete-Minoans exported not only raw metals but also tools, weapons, and wrought bronze artifacts across the Mediterranean. Photo: @Kemer Museum of Underwater Archaeology.
