Can Tho reaches dengue fever outbreak warning threshold

In July 2025, the Can Tho Health Department recorded nearly 200 cases of dengue fever, reaching the warning threshold of an outbreak in the community.

Specialist Doctor II Ha Tan Vinh, Deputy Director of the Center for Disease Control of Can Tho City, said: In the first months of the year, Can Tho recorded an average of about 40 cases of dengue fever each month.

In June 2025, the number of cases increased by approximately 100. In July alone, this number jumped to nearly 200. This is the threshold for warning of an outbreak in the community.

According to a report by the Can Tho City Center for Disease Control, as of July 27, the city had 1,188 cases of dengue fever; of which, Can Tho City (old) recorded 256 outbreaks in Ninh Kieu, Binh Thuy, Phong Dien, with 561 cases, an increase of 226 cases compared to the same period last year.

According to data recorded at Can Tho Children's Hospital - the final medical unit in the Mekong Delta region, by the end of July 2025, the dengue fever situation increased compared to the same period in 2024.

The total number of dengue fever cases treated at hospitals inside and outside the city was 554, an increase of 51%; severe cases were 59, an increase of 34% over the same period last year.

Doctor Nguyen Huynh Nhat Truong, Head of the Dengue Fever Department, Can Tho Children's Hospital, informed that at this time, the number of dengue fever cases at the Department has not shown any signs of cooling down, the number of patients is much higher than a month ago.

Most patients are children under 16 years old, with severely ill children usually between the ages of 9 and 16. First-time cases are usually easy to treat, while children with a history of the disease are more severe.

Many children are brought to the hospital in a serious condition because their families confuse dengue fever with viral fever. These two diseases have some similar initial symptoms such as high fever and fatigue.

However, dengue fever can cause more dangerous complications and has a different cause and transmission method than viral fever.

Therefore, as soon as children show signs of fever, parents should take them to the nearest medical facility for testing and timely treatment.

Since the beginning of the year, Can Tho Children's Hospital has proactively developed a plan to prevent hand, foot and mouth disease, dengue fever and Zika virus; updated and supplemented the hospital's treatment regimen according to the Ministry of Health 's instructions.

In addition, the hospital sent staff to attend training courses on disease prevention and control organized by the Pasteur Institute of Ho Chi Minh City and the Center for Disease Control of Can Tho City.

The hospital has implemented many bidding packages for drugs, supplies, and medical equipment for dengue fever treatment to ensure the needs of diagnosis and treatment at the unit. However, in reality, many difficulties arise because the supply of some drugs, especially drugs for dengue shock, is often unstable.

The hospital recommends that the Ministry of Health consider importing these items to have a stable source of goods when an epidemic occurs.

In recent times, the Can Tho City Health Department has coordinated with departments and organizations in propaganda work on dengue fever prevention and control and monitoring and handling cases in the community.

Since the beginning of the year, the city's health sector has carried out 3 proactive epidemic prevention and control campaigns in January, April and June 2025./.
