Andros Townsend unexpectedly joined a Thai middle-class club.

Andros Townsend, the former England international who has played for several Premier League clubs, has completed a surprise move to Thai League newcomers Kanchanaburi Power. This is the 16th club the 34-year-old midfielder has played for in his professional career.

Townsend joined Kanchanaburi Power after the fledgling club secured promotion to the Thai Premier League last season. Despite spending much of the summer as a commentator at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, he has decided to continue playing at the highest level and will wear the number 25 shirt at his new club.

The official announcement was made in a way rarely seen in professional football: on the personal Facebook page of club president Prawat Kithammakunnit. Townsend also made an impressive debut by posing with the new jersey on the famous bridge over the River Kwai - a historical symbol of Kanchanaburi province, about 150 km from Bangkok.

Kanchanaburi Power was only established in 2017, and in just eight years has undergone three name changes - from Singha Golden Bells, to Dragon Pathumwan Kanchanaburi, before adopting its current name. Despite its young age, the team is gradually making its mark in the Thai League with “shocking” deals.

Andros Townsend has played for many clubs in the Premier League.

Not only Townsend, the club also welcomed a series of other notable international recruits such as striker Aboubakar Kamara (former Fulham player), Luxembourg international Gerson Rodrigues and Algerian centre-back Mehdi Tahrat.

Notably, Townsend will play with the name “Townsend Sr” printed on the back of his shirt, to distinguish him from his son of the same name - Andros Townsend Jr. - who is said to be following in his father's footsteps in football.

Before coming to Thailand, Townsend played for a series of famous clubs in England such as Tottenham, Newcastle, Crystal Palace, Everton and most recently Luton Town in the 2023/24 season. In addition, he also had a short time in Turkey with Antalyaspor, playing 23 matches last season.

Townsend made 13 appearances for England between 2013 and 2016. He made his mark on his debut with a goal against Montenegro in a 2014 World Cup qualifier. He then scored in a win over San Marino and scored an equaliser against Italy in 2015.

At 34, Andros Townsend's journey is not over yet. And this time, he chose to start a new journey in a strange but potential land: Thai League.
