(Dan Tri) - Can Gio mangrove forest is being proposed to become a world Ramsar site because it has a total water surface area of ​​more than 20,000 hectares and 34,813 hectares of protective forest and is a flooded and semi-flooded area with a diverse ecosystem.

The dossier nominating Can Gio protective forest to become a Ramsar site of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee currently has four criteria that have met the general criteria. Among the achieved criteria, it shows that Can Gio protective forest has a high level of biodiversity, the area has many rare species of animals and plants recognized by the world.

Fifty years ago, this area was severely devastated by war. In 1979, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee launched a campaign to reforest Can Gio and established Duyen Hai Forestry Enterprise with the mission of restoring the mangrove ecosystem.

Can Gio Biosphere Reserve is home to a diverse flora and fauna, including nearly 200 species of birds, 40 species of reptiles, 20 species of mammals and more than 300 species of higher plants.

Can Gio Biosphere Reserve has 3 animal conservation areas, including: Bird conservation area (Vam Sat Bird Sanctuary), Bat conservation area (Bat Lagoon), Monkey conservation area (Monkey Island Area).

In addition, this place plays an important role in protecting the coast from erosion and providing habitat for many species of animals and plants, especially many species currently listed in the Red Book.

Vietnam has been recognized by UNESCO as having a total of 11 world biosphere reserves, becoming the country with the second highest number of biosphere reserves in Southeast Asia.

The core zone with an area of ​​over 6,000 hectares has the function of conserving the mangrove ecosystem, both planted and natural forests, and the habitats of wildlife, especially waterfowl.

The buffer zone covers an area of ​​more than 29,000 hectares of forest land and 12,763 hectares of water surface, with the function of restoring ecosystems based on dominant biomes and protecting the core zone, creating more space for wildlife outside the core zone.

The transition zone covers an area of ​​over 13,000 hectares of forest land and 7,267 hectares of water surface. This zone has the function of encouraging economic development models, cooperating with the participation of management staff, economic establishments, mass organizations, scientists, educational organizations... to preserve and promote the values ​​of natural resources and human resources.

Every year, the Protection Forest Management Board implements research and monitoring programs to monitor changes in forest resources in order to orient forest resource management towards sustainable development, increasing forest area and conserving biodiversity.

In addition, this is also a place for fishing and aquaculture, providing livelihoods for many families in the local community.

Can Gio Biosphere Reserve not only plays an important role in nature conservation, but also brings economic and tourism benefits to the locality. Conservation and sustainable development activities here contribute to raising public awareness of the value of nature.

Can Gio Biosphere Reserve is not only beautiful but also a symbol of nature conservation and sustainable development efforts in Vietnam. Currently, Ho Chi Minh City is cooperating with research organizations and experts to continue studying the ecosystem and developing effective conservation strategies.
