Cam Lam: Promoting the role of social networks in preventing and combating child marriage and incestuous marriage

In recent times, the government and associations of Cam Lam district have used social networks to propagate and educate about the harmful effects of early marriage and incestuous marriage, as well as provide information on related laws, thereby helping people, especially young people, raise awareness and behavior, and actively participate in the prevention of early marriage and incestuous marriage.

Child marriage and incestuous marriage are bad customs that still exist in many places in Vietnam in general, and Khanh Hoa province in particular, especially in areas with large ethnic minority populations. Child marriage and incestuous marriage are not only illegal but also have many consequences for individuals, families and society, directly affecting the quality of human resources, population, care,education and protection of children.

Deeply aware of the harmful effects of early marriage and incestuous marriage, in recent times, the authorities and associations of Cam Lam district, especially in Suoi Cat and Cam Phuoc Tay communes, have synchronously deployed many propaganda solutions, making full use of the role of social networks to disseminate knowledge about marriage and family among ethnic minority youth.

Youth Union propagates the harmful effects of early marriage and incestuous marriage in Suoi Lau 3 village, Suoi Cat commune, Cam Lam district.

Suoi Cat commune currently has 2,924 households, of which 591 households with 2,468 people are ethnic minorities, living in 3 villages: Suoi Lau 1, Suoi Lau 2 and Suoi Lau 3; the rate of poor and near-poor households here is still quite high with 495 households, accounting for 16.92%. Suoi Lau 1 village currently has 2 cases of child marriage. Following the village cadres and youth union, we went to MTTH's house in Suoi Lau 1 village. MTTH lived with her boyfriend since she was 13 years old, and gave birth at the age of 16. The baby is now 8 months old. Because MTTH is too young, not healthy enough, and does not have the skills to raise children, H.'s child is mainly taken care of by her grandmother. H. herself has to work for hire every day to make a living.

Ms. Mang Thi Thuy - Secretary of the Youth Union of Suoi Lau 1 village shared: "When I go to houses to propagate through social media channels, I analyze a lot about the harmful effects of early marriage to limit risks for girls. I hope that the locality will help cases of early marriage to have regular health check-ups after giving birth and support them to have jobs at home to have financial resources to raise children as well as take care of themselves."

The Youth Union guides people in Suoi Lau 1 village, Suoi Cat commune, Cam Lam district to find information on preventing child marriage and incestuous marriage on social networks.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Yen - Vice Chairman of Suoi Cat Commune People's Committee said: The locality regularly organizes community groups with the participation of women's associations, youth unions, medical staff, and population collaborators to go to students' homes to propagate. At the same time, strengthen propaganda and remind families to educate their children. However, there are still some cases of people who are addicted to playing, falling in love early, and getting married under the prescribed age. In these cases, the locality is very concerned, coordinating with grassroots medical staff to support girls in taking care of their health before and after giving birth.

Similarly, Cam Phuoc Tay commune, Cam Lam district has 1,847 households with 6,439 people, of which 333 households (about 1,210 people) are Raglai ethnic people, living mainly in Van Son village. People's lives mainly depend on agriculture and livestock; awareness of many households is still limited. Therefore, the locality regularly sends women's cadres, youth union members, prestigious people in the community, village elders, and village chiefs to homes to directly propagate through vivid and easy-to-understand articles and video clips posted on platforms such as Facebook, Zalo, YouTube, TikTok, etc. This method helps to quickly increase the reach, strongly convey messages against child marriage in ethnic minority communities, especially among young people, helping them better understand the harms and consequences of child marriage and incestuous marriage, and clearly understand the legal regulations on marriage and family such as the age of marriage, sanctions for violations of child marriage, etc.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuoc Ngoc - Vice Chairman of Cam Phuoc Tay Commune People's Committee said that in each program to disseminate and train the state's policies and laws, including the content of preventing child marriage and incestuous marriage, the locality always invites village elders and village chiefs to attend so that they can grasp the situation promptly and widely propagate it to the people in the village. In general, the locality has been doing a good job of propagating against child marriage and incestuous marriage among ethnic minorities, aiming towards a community without child marriage and incestuous marriage, building a progressive and civilized living environment.
