How new generation farmers attract tourists

Not stopping at familiar destinations such as Nui Coc Lake, Phuong Hoang Cave, Mo Ga Stream... in recent years, Thai Nguyen is gradually creating its mark in a new type of tourism, which is agricultural experience. In that experience journey, visitors not only come to see, but also directly touch the soil, pick fruit from the trees, feel the aroma of fresh tea leaves in the early morning sun and listen to the stories of the fields and gardens of the new generation of farmers.

In Na Ca hamlet, Vu Chan commune (Vo Nhai), Ms. Vi Thi Hai Hau's strawberry growing model combined with experiential tourism is mentioned by many people as a testament to the spirit of daring to think and daring to do.

Ms. Hau had the idea of growing strawberries in Vu Chan land because she found the soil suitable and the climate cool, similar to strawberry growing areas in Son La province. After consulting models everywhere, in early 2024, Ms. Hau's family invested more than 200 million VND to renovate 15 sao of land, install an automatic irrigation system, build a warehouse and design a photo area for tourists.

Grown on clean, chemical-free hilly land, the strawberry garden not only provides fresh products to consumers but also becomes an attractive destination in the highlands of Vo Nhai. In the fruit-ripening season, the rows of straight strawberries with bright red ripe fruits amidst the lush green of the mountains and forests create a poetic scene, attracting many tourists to take photos, check-in and experience strawberry picking.

Ms. Hau shared: Many tourists choose my strawberry garden as a weekend destination. Not only do they check in, they are also interested in learning more about clean agriculture or how people in the highlands connect with nature.

In Hoa Trung commune (Dong Hy), Nguyen Thi Trang and her husband have successfully built a greenhouse system to grow cantaloupe, cucumber and some types of green vegetables according to organic standards, applying science and technology to control temperature, humidity and nutrition.

Not only producing, Ms. Trang also organizes farm experience tours, so that visitors can visit the garden, harvest by themselves and learn about modern production models.

Ms. Trang said: The visitors who come to experience are mainly young people, students and families with small children. After visiting and witnessing the process of planting and caring for trees, many people have become regular customers, regularly ordering agricultural products from my family.

While the above two models suggest the appeal of relatively new plants and agricultural products in Thai Nguyen, in Hoang Nong commune (Dai Tu), a unique combination of tea picking, tea drying and trekking tours is being effectively exploited.

Taking advantage of the majestic natural scenery of Cua Tu stream, Tam Dao National Park, fresh air, and indigenous culture, many young people have built an interesting tour including experiences: picking tea in the early morning, trekking through the forest and bathing in the stream at noon, and participating in tea drying in the afternoon and sipping hot tea amidst beautiful natural scenery.

Duong Linh Dan, Owner of Homestay Cua Tu Linh Dan, said: The group of tourists who love this experience are mostly foreigners or young people who are passionate about exploring. The process of picking and making dried tea buds by hand has given them a completely new experience that few trekking tours currently have.

Nowadays, agricultural tourism is increasingly attracting more and more people and has a certain customer base. However, although it is a creative direction, agricultural tourism in Thai Nguyen is still quite new.

Therefore, activities are still small-scale, spontaneous, and lack connection into a complete service chain. Most farm owners doing tourism are part-time and have not received professional training, so it is difficult to ensure stable quality. Supporting infrastructure such as roads, accommodation, and public areas are also limited, making the tourist experience not truly complete.

However, it must be affirmed that, with the increasingly strong development of Thai Nguyen agriculture and the future merger of Bac Kan province, the potential for developing agricultural tourism experience in the province is still very large.

Thai Nguyen currently possesses many advantages such as: location near Hanoi, diverse ecosystem from plains to midlands, mountains, many famous products such as tea, grapefruit, custard apple... Therefore, if the agricultural tourism model is well planned, associated with education, resorts or indigenous cultural activities, it will certainly attract a large number of domestic and international tourists.

But to go further, Thai Nguyen needs a synchronous support mechanism, from training human resources for agricultural tourism, to building a digital media platform, connecting tours, promoting products in the direction of experiences that touch tourists' emotions.

If we know how to exploit local values with creative thinking, linking agriculture with tourism experiences, locations in Thai Nguyen will not only be attractive destinations but also become places to preserve beautiful memories of a trip full of flavors and emotions.
