Under the canopy of a royal poinciana tree at the A1 hill relic, French Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu and Secretary of State Patricia Miralles (in blue shirt) listened to the speech of Mr. William Schilardi, President of the Dien Bien Phu Veterans Association.

"Seventy years ago, the last cannons fell silent at Dien Bien Phu. For the Vietnamese, that moment was an unimaginable victory. For the French, it was an unimaginable defeat...

1954 was a year of deep rift between our two countries. For us, the Dien Bien Phu veterans, although every memory is a bullet wound, we have a responsibility to the younger generation to resolve this wound once and for all and relieve the pain of the past," the speech said.
