There are many causes of kidney stones, mainly related to daily habits such as drinking little water, eating salty foods, eating a lot of fat. In addition, holding urine causes urine to accumulate in the bladder and kidney, leading to the accumulation of minerals. When the accumulation time is prolonged, stones are likely to form.

People with kidney stones often experience pain starting from the back, lower ribs and then spreading to the pelvis and lower abdomen. This symptom occurs due to large stones moving and rubbing, causing damage to the urinary tract. In addition, the patient may experience difficulty urinating and pain when urinating.

Blood in the urine is a sign of damage to the urinary tract, which can be caused by stones or other causes. People with kidney stones also have symptoms of frequent urination, urinary incontinence, and patients often urinate frequently with small amounts of urine.

However, we can completely proactively prevent and control this condition through a scientific diet.

MSc. Dr. Cao Thi Nhu, Center for Nephrology - Urology and Dialysis, Bach Mai Hospital ( Hanoi ), said that drinking enough water is the most effective measure to prevent the formation of kidney stones.

Accordingly, water helps dilute urine, thereby reducing the concentration of substances that can form stones and supporting their natural elimination from the body.

Everyone should drink at least 2-3 liters of water per day. The best way is to drink water regularly throughout the day, not waiting until you feel thirsty. Filtered water or still mineral water is the best choice. You should avoid soft drinks, carbonated water and fruit juices that contain a lot of sugar.

In addition, according to Dr. Nhu, a low-salt diet plays a direct role in preventing kidney stones by helping to reduce the amount of calcium in the urine. We need to limit salt and foods high in salt such as fast food, processed foods and canned foods.

Daily salt intake should not exceed 2,300mg.

Consuming a lot of animal protein can also increase your risk of kidney stones. Foods like red meat, poultry, and fish can increase the levels of uric acid and calcium in your urine, which can help stones form.

Therefore, you should also limit the amount of animal protein in your daily diet. Instead, increase the use of protein from plant sources such as beans, nuts and soy products.

Vegetable protein not only helps reduce the risk of stone formation but is also a source of fiber and many other essential nutrients for the body.

To prevent stones, you can increase your intake of foods rich in citrate. Citrate is a natural substance that can effectively inhibit the formation of kidney stones. It prevents the crystallization of calcium and oxalate ions, the two main components that make up kidney stones.

Citrate is abundant in citrus fruits such as lemons, oranges, and grapefruits. The simplest way to supplement is to drink unsweetened lemon water every day or use natural juice from oranges or grapefruits.
