On the evening of June 9, information about male student Bui Nhat Minh - a former 9th grade student of Nguyen Tat Thanh Secondary and High School - attracted attention because of his impressive score in the entrance exam to the High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences (Hanoi National University).
Minh scored 9 points in math round 1, 8.25 points in literature, 9.75 points in English and a perfect score of 10 in the specialized math exam. With the calculation of admission scores of the High School for Natural Sciences, Minh scored 29/30 points, 9.5 points higher than the school's entrance exam score.
Sharing about Minh’s impressive exam results, Ms. Le Thi Tho - Minh’s mother - said that the family was very happy to receive Minh’s exam results. However, for the teenager, studying is “to see the beauty of the subject, not for the score”, so all rankings, achievements, and awards are just very “light” joys for him.
Throughout the preparation process for the entrance exam to specialized schools, Minh mainly studied on his own. He also went to extra classes, but not much.
In particular, Minh only went to extra math classes. For the remaining subjects, Minh asked his family to let him study at home, because he thought that studying in class provided enough knowledge, and he would review by himself. With less time spent in extra classes, Minh had more time to delve into the math problems that interested him.
Parents should encourage their children to... study less.
Minh's love of mathematics appeared very early. When he was in primary school, every time he was taken to the bookstore, Minh only chose to buy math books. The teenager's love of mathematics came very naturally.
During his secondary school years, Minh decided to pursue a career in mathematics, and decided to take the entrance exam to a specialized school. From then on, Minh focused on studying mathematics, deepening his knowledge of mathematics, and taking a moderate amount of extra classes.

Minh is very excited about participating in national and international math competitions. He has participated in many international math competitions held online and has won dozens of awards. Participating in competitions is a way for Minh to position himself, to know how far he has come compared to the goals he set for himself.
Minh's parents sometimes even feel "scared" because their son is so passionate about studying math, they worry that he will put too much pressure on himself. Minh's parents do not set any goals for him, on the contrary, he is the one who sets his own goals, arranges his own study time, to achieve those goals.
Many times, Minh's parents had to encourage him to... reduce the time he spent studying math, to know how to stop when he felt tired so that he could enjoy the joy of learning.
Fearing that their son would develop abnormally, Minh's parents encouraged him to learn to play the piano. He learned very quickly. He completed exercises that took others 2 weeks to practice in... 2 days, which surprised his piano teacher.
Seeing that learning to play an instrument was not enough to “make things difficult”, Minh’s parents encouraged him to learn martial arts. There was a time when he studied martial arts five times a week and quickly became a belt holder.
Parents noticed in Minh a high level of concentration and determination that helped him quickly make progress.
In addition, Minh is very self-motivated. He always arranges his own studies. Minh's parents' greatest wish is to help him find balance in life, so that he "doesn't just know math".
The talented student is loved by both teachers and friends.
Ms. Le Thi Phuong Thao - Minh's homeroom teacher throughout his middle school years - commented that Minh's outstanding personality traits were optimism, calmness, and moderation.
When he returned from the exam, Minh only told his family and teachers: "I did the test." Everyone was relieved, but no one thought he could get a perfect score on the specialized math test. The teenager's humility always makes adults feel pleasantly surprised.

In the eyes of teachers and friends, Minh is also very talented. He knows how to play classical music on the piano, is very enthusiastic about group activities, and is a very flexible and witty MC.
Minh has a neat demeanor, calm personality, deep thinking, somewhat more mature than his age, but Minh is also very cheerful, sociable, and lovable in the eyes of friends.
He is especially calm when facing exams. According to his homeroom teacher, Minh's greatest strength is his ability to concentrate, which helps him achieve his goals.
Ms. Phuong Thao said that what she cares about most when accompanying her students is helping them maintain optimism, feel joy and happiness in learning, so that they know "not to be arrogant when winning, not to be discouraged when losing".
For Minh, although he does not put much pressure on his achievements, he always sets goals for himself in learning math. He still looks at his level of completion when taking exams to know how far he has come.
Minh does not compete with other friends, but always focuses on surpassing himself in his journey of learning math. Until now, he has always remained modest and calm before all his achievements.
Observing Minh’s journey of growth over the past 4 years, Ms. Phuong Thao saw the value of perseverance that creates impressive breakthroughs. When he was a 6th grader, Minh did not make a strong impression on his teachers and friends, but he had a surprising journey after that.
Since deciding to pursue mathematics, passion, focus and determination have helped Minh make remarkable progress.
In addition, Ms. Thao acknowledged the great support of Minh's parents. Minh's parents are always very proactive in exchanging information with teachers, to create good coordination between family and school.
Ms. Phuong Thao was especially impressed by Minh's way of thinking in studying. He told himself how to study to see the good points of each subject. At first, Minh was not good at literature, but he set a goal to study to see the good points of literature. In this way, he gradually improved and his scores improved significantly.
In addition, Minh always knows very clearly what he wants. When facing an important transfer exam, his parents asked Minh: "What additional support do you need from your family?". Minh answered simply: "The only thing I need is for my parents to always be at home to eat dinner with me every night. That is the companionship that makes me feel most fulfilled." Minh's answer surprised both his parents and teachers.
Teaching good students how to... "win without arrogance"
The only thing that makes Ms. Phuong Thao worried about Minh is that he has to face the pressure of surpassing himself, surpassing the compliments and achievements he has achieved.
During her time as Minh's homeroom teacher, Ms. Phuong Thao always tried to give compliments that were appropriate for his age, so that he would know that he was being recognized, but also not fall into a state of illusion or arrogance.

For Minh's classmates, she talked privately with them and emphasized that impressive achievements are what everyone wants, but each person's path to maturity is different, and each person's abilities are also different.
Therefore, she hopes that her classmates will "gently" recognize Minh's achievements. They should also share the joy with her friends and encourage her friends "gently", so that everyone can enjoy the simple joys of school life.
Ms. Phuong Thao also understands that everyone has times when they have to face failure and things that don't go as planned. At that time, how would a student who is too familiar with compliments and impressive achievements feel?
When she tried to ask Minh this question frankly, he shared that if he ever had to face failure, he would see it as a journey to conquer a new challenge.
For example, if learning math makes me happy, I will enjoy all forms of expression of that joy, which may include failures. If I encounter any problems in my studies or life, I will stop to think about the cause of the problem, then find a way to overcome it.
Ms. Phuong Thao really trusts Minh's logical sharing, because the student always makes her feel confident, always has a steady, confident way of speaking with the style of "say it, do it".
