Turkmenistan's "Door to Hell" is a 70m-wide sinkhole in the Karaku Desert. In the 1970s, a Soviet gas drilling station accidentally punctured an air pocket and collapsed, creating a crater that began to leak gas. Photo: Wikimedia. At that time, scientists decided to burn the crater to prevent toxic gases from escaping and spreading. However, the fire has been burning ever since. Recently, on June 6, Turkmenistan authorities said that the fire at the "Door to Hell" crater is now three times smaller than in the past and can only be seen nearby. The cause is a decrease in natural gas. Photo: John Pavelka from Austin, TX, USA/Wikimedia Commons/CC BY 2.0. The "Gateway to Hell" in Siberia is the Batagay Crater. This is the world's largest sinkhole formed by thawing permafrost. Photo: Padi Prints. The Batagay crater is often referred to as the gateway to hell because of the loud explosions that can be heard when the soil collapses. Photo: Alexander Kizyakov, Lomonosov Moscow State University.
Experts have been studying the Batagay crater to track its growth as more and more of the frozen soil melts at the rim. Photo: Wikimedia/(CC BY-SA 4.0).
