A nearly perfectly preserved 5,600-year-old mummy has changed what was known about ancient Egyptian mummification. According to research published in the Journal of Archaeological Science , the results of the study of the "Fred" mummy provide evidence that the Egyptians mummified 1,500 years earlier than previously thought. Specifically, experts examined "Fred" - a mummy discovered more than 100 years ago and preserved at the Egyptian Museum in Turin, Italy. Photo: Wikimedia Commons.

Fred had never undergone any artificial preservation when he arrived at the museum, making him the perfect specimen for studying ancient Egyptian mummification techniques. Photo: Raffaella Bianucci, University of Turin.

Initially, scientists believed that Fred was a natural mummy, meaning his body had been preserved by the hot, dry climate of the desert without undergoing a complex, intentional mummification process. Photo: cristian/Flickr.

New research has found that Fred's mummy was not only mummified, but preserved using a similar formula to that used 2,500 years later for pharaohs and nobles like Tutankhamun during Egypt's peak mummification period. Photo: egypttoursportal.

Egyptologist Jana Jones' team tested the shroud on Fred's body and discovered an ointment used in embalming. Photo: egypttoursportal.

The formula of this ointment is a combination of tree resin or sugar, heated conifer resin and aromatic plant extracts. Photo: egypttoursportal.

The ingredients are strikingly similar to ointments used thousands of years later, suggesting that the practice of mummification was practiced by the ancient Egyptians much earlier than previously thought. Photo: egypttoursportal.

Fred was found in a fetal position with all his internal organs still inside his body, in stark contrast to the later Egyptian method of mummification, where the body was laid flat and the internal organs were removed before being mummified. Photo: egypt-museum.com.
