American automaker Ford has just issued a nationwide stop-sale order for the Mustang Mach-E electric car after discovering a software error related to the door locking system, a problem that could prevent drivers from entering the car or even trap children inside if a power outage occurs.

According to a notice sent to dealers this week, a total of 196,911 Mustang Mach-Es from the 2021 through 2025 model years are affected. These vehicles are manufactured at two factories: Chongqing, China, and Cuautitlán, Mexico.

The error is not in the mechanics but in the software.

Ford confirmed that the problem is not related to the mechanical locking mechanism, but comes from the control software. Specifically, when the 12V battery is exhausted, the door locking system can remain in the previous state whether locked or unlocked, causing a situation where the user cannot open or close the car door, from the outside or inside.

This is especially dangerous for children, especially infants strapped into rear-facing safety seats. Although the vehicle has a manual door release lever, in an emergency or with an incapacitated person, the consequences can be serious.

There was a baby stuck for 40 minutes.

The Mach-E Owner Forum has documented numerous cases of people being locked out or locked out of their cars. One of the most serious incidents occurred earlier this year, when a 9-month-old baby was trapped in the car for 40 minutes after the ignition failed. The child’s father was forced to smash the windshield after even AAA couldn’t get the door open.

Ford said there have been no reports of injuries or crashes related to the issue, but it has begun recalling vehicles already sold to prepare for a software update. The patch is expected to be deployed in the third quarter of this year.

Dealers have been instructed to stop selling, delivering, or displaying Mustang Mach-Es to customers until the update is complete. Once the software is ready, technicians will update the engine control module and OBD diagnostic module for all affected vehicles.

However, Ford is still facing a class action lawsuit in California, in which the plaintiffs demand that the company equip traditional mechanical locks to prevent emergency situations such as power outages.

As automakers push to develop electric vehicles, the Mach-E incident once again raises questions about the safety of electronic control systems that rely entirely on software. For users, especially families with young children, simple features like a spare mechanical lock may be essential, but many manufacturers are ignoring them in the race to modernize.
