Vietnam team needs to secure position
The Vietnamese team rose 5 places in the April FIFA rankings to 109th in the world , but because of the 0-4 loss to Malaysia (ranked lower at 131st) on June 10 in the third qualifying round of the 2027 Asian Cup, they were deducted 13.91 points, leaving them with 1,162.92 points. Thereby, they dropped 4 places to 113th in the world.

The Malaysian team, with the points gained from winning against Vietnam, but also having international friendly matches with a draw and a loss to Cape Verde (1-1 and 0-3), was awarded 14.91 points. Thanks to that, Harimau Malaya has made a great leap forward by rising 6 places to 125th in the world.
In Southeast Asia, only Indonesia has the highest increase in the rankings (5 places) along with Malaysia. The archipelago team, thanks to the 1-0 win over China on June 5, was awarded 15.05 points. Meanwhile, the crushing 0-6 loss to Japan on June 10 resulted in only a deduction of 3.42 points. Thanks to that, Indonesia was awarded 11.63 points, moving up 5 places to 118th in the world.
With these positions, the Vietnamese team is still ranked above Indonesia and Malaysia, but the gap has been significantly narrowed, 5 and 12 places respectively, compared to April when the gap was 14 and 22 places respectively.
In the upcoming FIFA Days schedule in September, the Vietnamese team has no schedule to compete, because coach Kim Sang-sik needs to focus on the U.23 team with important goals at the U.23 Southeast Asian tournament, the U.23 Asian qualifiers and the 33rd SEA Games at the end of the year.
The Vietnam team will return to competition in October with two matches against Nepal on October 9 at home and October 14 away, in Group F of the third qualifying round of the 2027 Asian Cup.
Meanwhile, the Malaysian team will compete in the Central Asian tournament - CAFA Nations Cup 2025 (from August 29 to September 8). The Indonesian team is also expected to have 2 international friendly matches in September to prepare for the fourth qualifying round of the Asian region for tickets to the 2026 World Cup in October.
Meanwhile, in the same situation as the Vietnamese team, the Thai team also lost 1-3 to Turkmenistan in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers, despite winning 2-0 against India (friendly), and was deducted 12.24 points, falling 3 places from 99th in the world to outside the top 100 at 102nd place.
This fall of the Thai team also means that Southeast Asian football officially has no team in the world's top 100 after many years, when the Vietnamese team continuously occupied it and recently it was the turn of the Thai team. The consolation is that the Thai and Vietnamese teams are still in the top 20 of Asia, at 16th and 20th place respectively, and are also the top teams in Southeast Asia.
In the world region, Argentina is still leading, followed by Spain, France, England and Brazil in the top 5 leading teams.
