Business

The average business turnover growth of 13 key economic sectors in Australia in May 2025 decreased slightly by 0.1% compared to the previous month. Of which, 5/13 sectors recorded a decrease (manufacturing, mining, construction, retail, arts and creative services, etc.); 8/13 sectors had good growth such as electricity-gas-water, wholesale, food and accommodation services, etc.

This is the first monthly decrease since October 2024. However, compared to the same period in 2024, the average growth still recorded an increase of 3.3%, in which the sectors with the strongest growth were accommodation services (+11.9%), manufacturing (+8.5%); on the contrary, the sectors with sharp declines included mining (-4.5%), entertainment services (-3.7%)...

Tourism

According to the latest statistics, the total number of foreign visitors to Australia in May 2025 reached nearly 1.66 million, an increase of 12.2% over the same period in 2024. Of these, Australian citizens returning home for the short term were 970 thousand (up 20.1%) and international visitors to Australia for the short term were more than 611 thousand (up 1.7%); this number of visitors was about 8.5% lower than in May 2019, the period before the Covid-19 pandemic. Visitors to Australia in May 2025 were also lower than the high of December 2024 (more than 945 thousand), mainly due to the sharp increase in the Australian dollar exchange rate.

Short-term international arrivals to Australia chart by month

New Zealand visitors topped the list of international visitors to Australia with 117,000 arrivals, followed by China with 67,000 arrivals and India with 48,000 arrivals. By state/territory, New South Wales was the state that attracted the most international visitors with 227,000 arrivals, up 1.3% compared to 2024; followed by Victoria with 151,000 arrivals, down 2.3%; notably, South Australia recorded a sharp increase of 19.4% compared to 2024 with more than 18,600 arrivals.

Housing market

After a period of stagnation in 2024, Australian house prices continued to rise after the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) cut interest rates twice in 2025, making borrowing costs lower and boosting demand for homes. Notably, all eight capital cities of six states and two territories recorded increases for the first time in four years.

Statistics from leading real estate companies show that about 1,700 suburbs across Australia have seen house prices rise in the year to June 2025, with Perth seeing the biggest increase; conversely, house prices have also recorded declines in about 400 other suburbs. Australia's housing crisis is likely to continue to be more tense in the coming time as supply is in short supply and demand continues to increase.

Australia-US tariff negotiations:

Australia has lifted biosecurity restrictions on beef imports from the United States after Australian authorities assessed that US beef met requirements. Australian Agriculture Minister Julie Collins said the government would never compromise on biosecurity; US beef had undergone rigorous scientific and risk assessment over the past decade; and the Australian Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) was satisfied with the enhanced controls the US had put in place to effectively manage biosecurity risks.

Previously, US beef had been able to be exported to Australia since 2019, but certain products were banned due to concerns related to mad cow disease, including beef originating from Canada or Mexico and slaughtered in the US. Experts say this move by Australia is seeking a solution to negotiate tariffs with the US.
