Arsenal stirs up transfer frenzy with 60 million euro 'blockbuster'

According to The Athletic, Arsenal are negotiating to sign centre-back Piero Hincapie from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer transfer window of 2025.

Piero Hincapie could become Arsenal's ninth new signing if the deal goes through.

Arsenal have officially contacted Bayer Leverkusen after Piero Hincapie expressed his desire to leave, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. The Gunners are expected to sell Jakub Kiwior (of interest to Porto) and Oleksandr Zinchenko to make room before making an offer for the Ecuadorian centre-back.

Hincapie is under contract until 2029 but has already announced his intention to leave Leverkusen. The German club are willing to let him leave if they receive a €60m release clause, although the two sides are said to be negotiating to lower that amount.

After the 1-2 defeat to Hoffenheim on August 23, the 23-year-old player burst into tears on the pitch - a clear sign that he is about to end his journey at BayArena.

Having joined Leverkusen from Talleres in 2021, Hincapie has quickly established himself as one of Europe's most promising centre-backs. He has played 166 times for Leverkusen, 46 times for Ecuador, and was a key part of the club's historic 2023/24 campaign: helping the club go unbeaten in the Bundesliga, win the German Cup and reach the Europa League final.

With the ability to play as a left-sided centre-back or full-back, along with good speed and technique, Hincapie has become Arsenal's top target in their efforts to improve their defence.

In the summer of 2025, Arsenal were active in the market, spending more than £250 million to bring in a series of new players such as Kepa Arrizabalaga, Christian Norgaard, Martin Zubimendi, Noni Madueke, Viktor Gyokeres, Cristhian Mosquera and Victor Ozhianvuna. If successful with Hincapie, the Emirates team will have an important piece in their title-winning ambitions.
