According to The Verge , in the latest Power On news from Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, the next-generation iPad Air will have the Apple M2 chip. Previously, reports said that the next-generation iPad Air will offer two screen size options, including 11 inches and 12.9 inches.
iPad Air will be more clearly differentiated from iPad Pro next year
Another way Apple is said to be simplifying its iPad portfolio is by eliminating the 9th-generation iPad, which was replaced by the more expensive 10th-generation iPad last year. Gurman said that eliminating the 9th-generation iPad would allow Apple to “gradually phase out some of the older S Pens,” referring to the Pencil version that Apple introduced in 2015.
Gurman said that March 2024 is when Apple will launch the new 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Air, which means the company's mid-range products will be on a two-year upgrade cycle. Gurman also said that the iPad Air will come with the M2 chip, while the iPad Pro will come with the new and more powerful M3 chip. The latter option means the iPad Pro could become a laptop replacement for more diverse and computationally demanding tasks.
Gurman also said that the new 12.9-inch iPad Air will work with the Magic Keyboard, just like the current iPad Pro. If that’s true, it would make sense for Apple to equip future iPad Air models with the same camera array as the iPad Pro.
Ultimately, these are good moves for Apple, even if they don’t completely solve the iPad buying dilemma. Today’s iPads are pretty similar, and choosing based on hardware features and power needs is much easier.
