Apple is about to 'transform' to enter a new super cycle

After many years without much design innovation, Apple will revamp the iPhone for the third consecutive year.

For the first time, Apple plans to make major redesigns to its iPhones for three consecutive years, according to Bloomberg . While its competitors are shifting their focus to AI, Apple will leave its comfort zone and refresh its flagship phone line.

iPhone 17 Air will bring a "MacBook Air moment" to Apple

The first change will come in September, when the iPhone 17 Air will replace the 16 Plus. This product follows the strategy of the MacBook Air laptop line that Apple first applied in 2008, which is thinner, lighter and easier to market immediately.

However, like its predecessors over the years, the iPhone 17 Air will have to make trade-offs with poor battery life, a single rear camera, and no SIM card slot. It will also use Apple’s first in-house modem chip, rather than Qualcomm’s more powerful versions.

There will also be an iPhone 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max. These are essentially iPhone 16s with a slightly different look, according to Bloomberg writer Mark Gurman. “The Pros will have a redesigned camera system and back design, as well as an orange color, but it’s not too flashy,” he writes.

The Pro models have long been Apple’s best-selling product lines because they’re practical for most consumers, but Apple’s new Air design is still worth noting, potentially laying the groundwork for future innovation.

Apple's "trump card" will appear in 2026, the first foldable iPhone with the code name V68. This device is expected to have 5 cameras, and like the iPhone Air, will not have a SIM slot. The foldable iPhone will use Touch ID instead of Face ID, and is expected to be popular with the group of users who want to own a new Apple product.

Foldable iPhone is the highlight of the 20th anniversary

Apple suppliers have already started working on the new model and are expected to ramp up production early next year. Rival Samsung has demonstrated the potential of the foldable phone segment, which has somewhat fueled the anticipation among fans.

The company is currently testing only black and white versions of the foldable phone, which will be powered by the C2 modem, Apple’s first mobile chip that’s close to the latest models from Qualcomm.

There has been a recent change in display technology on the foldable iPhone. Apple is moving to in-cell technology instead of on-cell as before, to eliminate the air gap between the display and the cover, making the crease less noticeable and improving touch accuracy.

By 2027, Apple will celebrate the 20th anniversary of its flagship phone with a curved glass “iPhone 20.” This design will officially break the familiar square shape from 2020, moving to a style with curved glass edges throughout, matching the Liquid Glass interface for iOS and other upcoming operating systems.

In short, 2025 won't be a revolutionary year for the iPhone. But it will lay the groundwork for big changes in 2026 and 2027, making it an exciting time for fans.

Meanwhile, other Apple devices will get a number of upgrades, though most are minor. These include an updated Apple Watch, faster Vision Pro headphones, and an M5-powered iPad Pro. Rumor has it that Apple is working on new AirPods Pro with heart rate monitoring capabilities, along with a HomePod mini and an Apple TV.

Next year, Apple is preparing to launch the iPhone 17e, new low-cost iPad models, and an upgraded iPad Air, alongside the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air with the M5 chip. Major Mac accessories are also in the works, including a brand new external display.

Further products in development include screenless smart glasses, desktop robots, camera-equipped AirPods, and a home security camera system. But the company’s main priority remains the iPhone.
