Zidane has long been mentioned as a candidate for the position of head coach of MU. In the context of Ruben Amorim's ability being doubted when earning only 28 points after 29 matches in charge in the Premier League, Zidane is mentioned as an ideal replacement.
Former player Petit said MU needs to meet two conditions if they want to convince Zidane to take charge. Petit said: "First is the quality of the players, Zidane is very important to that and is careful with each choice. Next is the working environment. What is happening at MU is considered not suitable for Zidane's standards. If Zidane chooses MU, he must have a solution to help the club recover."
Zidane has not managed a team since leaving Real Madrid in 2021. At the Bernabeu, he won three Champions League titles and two La Liga titles as head coach.
In September 2024, Zidane spoke out about refusing to lead MU: "I know a little English, but not really fluently. That's why I refused."
Zidane is currently the number one candidate for the French national team coach position, as Didier Deschamps is expected to step down after the 2026 World Cup. In addition to Zidane, Oliver Glasner (Crystal Palace) and Gareth Southgate (former England coach) are potential candidates to replace Amorim if this coach is fired.
