"A police escort vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb while traveling from the city of Mingora (Pakistan) to the hotel. Several local police were injured. Russian diplomats are safe," the Russian embassy said on Telegram.
Later, Geo TV quoted local police sources as confirming that at least one policeman was killed and four others were injured in a roadside bomb explosion in Swat district of Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
According to Geo TV news, the attack targeted a convoy of foreign diplomats, including Russian Ambassador to Pakistan Albert Khorev.
Earlier, the Russian Embassy in Islamabad said Ambassador Khorev was in northern Pakistan as part of a delegation that included ambassadors from several other countries. He participated in a tourism development forum in the Swat Valley of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province organized by the Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
AFP quoted Malakand Deputy Inspector General of Police Muhammad Ali Khan Gandapur as confirming that the delegation included diplomats from many countries. The Pakistani Foreign Office said the diplomats were safe after the incident and had returned to Islamabad.
No armed organization has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
