Lam Xuan is the village with the largest number of pig farmers in Cua Viet commune, with about 100 households; of which 3 households raise from 50 to 70 pigs. Through the actual inspection, Mr. Hoang Thanh Luong, Head of Gio Viet Commune Economic Department, Head of the inspection team, assessed that the households basically complied well with the sanitation of the barns such as investing in building biogas tanks, using lime and microorganisms. The households also proactively prevented epidemics. However, there were still 3 cases where waste was not thoroughly treated, causing bad odors.

Checking the farm of about 30m2 of Mr. Ta Anh Thanh, who is raising 10 pigs, it was found that Mr. Thanh had invested in a biogas tank to treat waste and odors. Mr. Thanh said that it was impossible to avoid the odors arising from the initial treatment stage. The inspection team asked Mr. Thanh to regularly treat with lime and microorganisms to limit odors.

In addition, Ms. Nguyen Thi Ha's household invested in a 100m2 barn to raise large numbers of pigs, but currently only raises 2 sows. Ms. Ha admitted that she does not have a biogas tank, and waste is dumped directly into the fields. The inspection team requested that if she continues to raise large numbers, Ms. Ha must invest in building a biogas tank or take measures to ensure environmental hygiene to handle the odor that affects her family and the community.

In particular, Ms. Nguyen Thi Lai's household is raising pigs in a farm model with more than 70 pigs but has not invested in a biogas tank to treat waste, causing a foul odor. The inspection team requested the household owner to immediately treat the odor by spreading microorganisms, using a cushion layer and planting water hyacinth in the waste reservoir to treat the odor that affects the lives of nearby residents. In the long term, Ms. Lai must invest in a biogas tank or other solutions to ensure environmental hygiene.

The delegation asked pig farmers to sign a commitment to strictly comply with regulations on barn hygiene to ensure the rural environment. At the same time, in the current complicated epidemic situation, it is recommended that households strengthen preventive measures, and when pigs get sick, they must immediately report to the authorities and not hide the epidemic.

Mr. Hoang Thanh Luong added that there is currently no land fund for developing pig farms in Gio Viet commune, so people mainly take advantage of household farming areas and farm models to develop the economy.
