At the WWDC 2025 Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple announced a new feature called Live Translation , integrated into core communication apps like Messages, FaceTime, and Phone.
According to Apple, this feature will help users overcome language barriers when chatting, and is supported by the new Apple Intelligence platform.
Specifically, in the Messages messaging application, the content the user types will be instantly translated into the language used by the recipient. When the other party responds, the content will also be translated back.
With FaceTime, translated captions appear in real time while preserving the original voice.
For traditional voice calls, users can hear live translations during the conversation, even if the other end of the line is not using an Apple device.
In the initial phase, this feature supports 9 languages including: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish and Simplified Chinese, but not Vietnamese.
Apple's introduction of this feature seemed to surprise Vietnamese users, but in reality, the opposite was true. Users criticized Apple for being outdated because on some devices running the Android operating system, especially Samsung Galaxy, similar features such as voice translation, real-time subtitles during calls, and direct translation in messaging applications have appeared for many years.
Apple introduces live translation feature on calls
Mr. Tran Minh Tam (Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City), a user of both iPhone and Galaxy S24, rated Live Translation as a useful feature in the context of increasingly popular global communication. However, he said that Apple was slow compared to companies running the Android operating system.
"Samsung currently translates quite quickly and the semantics are quite good. Apple is the world's leading phone company, but it's really too late to have it now," said Mr. Tam.
Mr. Huu Phuc (District 4, Ho Chi Minh City) believes that Live Translation will be especially useful in quick communication situations such as asking for directions, traveling , or connecting with international friends. However, he expressed concerns about the accuracy of the translation in cases requiring specialized language or high accuracy.
“Just a few mistranslations can cause misunderstandings, especially in work discussions or contracts. Meanwhile, Apple has not paid much attention to the Vietnamese market for a long time, so I am afraid that the ability to translate accurately into Vietnamese will be limited if updated later," said Mr. Phuc.
However, many users also believe that Apple's integration of Live Translation into the iOS ecosystem will create the premise for popularizing language translation technology, especially with users who have little access to third-party translation applications.
