The Vietnamese women's sepak takraw team excelled in defeating host Thailand in the final. |
After a narrow defeat in last year’s final, Vietnam came back strong with the determination to take revenge. Despite losing 12-15 in the first half under pressure from the stands and the brilliant performance of Thailand’s main striker, Ratsamee Thongsod, coach Tran Thi Vui’s students were not too shaken.
The second half marked the turning point of the match. From a successful block that helped neutralize Thailand's attack, the Vietnamese team gradually regained control of the game and accelerated. Ratsamee was substituted in the middle of the half when the home team fell behind. Vietnam took advantage of the opportunity, winning 15-8, bringing the match into the deciding round.
Entering the third set, Thailand took a 5-2 lead. However, with their bravery and steely spirit, the Vietnamese girls scored 6 consecutive points to lead 8-5. Despite coach Poonsak's efforts to adjust, the Thai team could not stop the rising momentum of the Vietnamese female athletes.
At the decisive moment, Wiphada Chitphuan's error ended Thailand's hopes, and sparked a celebration for the Vietnamese women's team with a 15-7 victory.
This is the third time the Vietnamese women's team has won the world championship, after 2022 and 2023. At the end of the tournament, Vietnam won 5 medals (1 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze), affirming its leading position in the world women's sepak takraw village.
Sepak Takraw is also an Asian Games sport , with 6 sets of medals awarded at each Games.
