From tomorrow (January 1, 2025), Vietnam will officially implement a policy to ban some new generation cigarettes, marking an important step forward in the strategy to prevent and combat the harmful effects of tobacco.

This is a strong decision from the Government to protect public health and reduce the serious consequences caused by tobacco, especially for the younger generation.

Minister of Health Dao Hong Lan talks about the harmful effects of new generation cigarettes at the National Assembly.

Over the years, tobacco has become one of the main causes of non-communicable diseases such as lung cancer, cardiovascular disease, stroke and many other dangerous diseases.

According to statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO), tobacco is the cause of death for more than 8 million people each year globally. In Vietnam, nearly 40% of adults use tobacco, and this rate is increasing, especially among young people.

The ban on new-generation tobacco products aims to prevent the proliferation of new -generation tobacco products, especially e-cigarettes, heat-not-burn tobacco products and flavored tobacco products.

New generation cigarettes are products that are attracting young people because of their convenience and attractive advertisements. Scientific studies have shown that although they do not burn like traditional cigarettes, these products still contain many toxic substances, can be addictive and have negative impacts on health.

Despite clear warnings about the harmful effects of traditional cigarettes, the use of new generation cigarettes is still on the rise, especially among young people.

Therefore, it is extremely necessary to promote and raise public awareness about the harmful effects of new generation cigarettes. Communication campaigns, especially on social networking platforms, need to be promoted so that people understand the dangers of modern tobacco products.

To ensure the effectiveness of the policy, authorities need to strengthen inspection, supervision and strictly handle violations.

Tobacco stores must comply with strict regulations on not selling new generation tobacco products, especially to people under 18 years old. New forms of advertising and marketing of tobacco products must be strictly controlled to avoid attracting consumers, especially young people.

In addition to banning new tobacco products, an important factor that cannot be overlooked is supporting tobacco users in the process of quitting.

Smoking cessation support programs should be promoted, including the provision of alternative methods and therapies, psychological counseling and health care services.

Governments and health organizations also need to provide educational materials, online courses and free counseling services to help people quit smoking effectively.

Along with banning new generation cigarettes, smoke-free policies in public areas, offices, schools and hospitals need to be strictly enforced.

This not only protects the health of non-smokers but also helps create a healthy living environment for everyone.

Along with that, strengthening measures to prevent tobacco use in schools and universities will also be an important part of the long-term strategy to combat the harmful effects of tobacco.
