Materials lighter than air can now be 3D printed

Graphene aerogel - the lightest material on the planet has just been successfully 3D printed, opening a new era for materials technology and a series of future applications.

Graphene aerogel is 7.5 times lighter than air, weighing just 160 grams per cubic meter.

The material is nicknamed “frozen smoke” because it is nearly transparent and extremely light.

Although lighter than air, graphene aerogel does not float because air is trapped inside the hollow structure.

Recently, American scientists have successfully 3D printed this super-light material for the first time.

The process uses graphene oxide, water and a cold substrate at -25°C to form each layer.

After freezing, the water is removed using liquid nitrogen to preserve the structure.

Finally, oxygen is removed from the material by heat to obtain pure graphene aerogel.

Graphene aerogel promises great applications in insulation, oil refining, space and even stealth devices.
