At the 2025 Asia Open Short Track Speed Skating Trophy held in India - the largest tournament in Asia under the auspices of the International Skating Union (ISU) and the Asian Skating Confederation (ASU), the Vietnamese delegation made a proud mark with the excellent performance of young athlete Nguyen Hoang Bao Chi.

This year’s tournament brings together 240 athletes from 11 countries, including leading skating powers such as Japan, China, Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, India and Vietnam. This is the first time Bao Chi has stepped onto the continental stage, after impressing at last year’s Southeast Asian Championship with 2 gold medals.

In her first time participating in a continental tournament of such outstanding scale and stature, Bao Chi (born in 2015) surprised experts and fans when she won the Silver Medal in the 333m event and the Bronze Medal in the 500m event.

This Asian Open is of a much higher level, not only because of its scale and professional quality but also because of the presence of strong teams with professional training systems.

It is not easy for a Vietnamese athlete under 10 years old to win 2 medals in 2 events and reflects a strong breakthrough in both talent and competitive spirit.

Born and raised in Hanoi, Nguyen Hoang Bao Chi started skating and roller skating at the age of 5. Although she was very young, she soon showed a strong passion for this speed sport .

According to her family, Bao Chi can spend dozens of hours each week practicing - a serious and persistent schedule rarely seen in children.

Under the guidance of professional coaches and the constant support of her family, Bao Chi not only trained in technique but also in physical strength and competitive spirit. She has won many high prizes at provincial and national tournaments.

Notably, at the Vietnam National Figure Skating and Roller Championship, the most prestigious tournament of the year organized by the Vietnam Figure Skating and Roller Federation, Bao Chi was one of the few young athletes to win 2 gold medals, surpassing nearly 100 athletes from Hanoi , Ho Chi Minh City and other localities.

Thanks to this impressive record, Bao Chi was invited to be a brand ambassador for a number of sports brands and became an inspirational image for the young skating community in Vietnam.

Bao Chi’s success at this tournament is not only a source of personal pride but also a mark of the development of Vietnamese children’s sports in the regional arena. In the context that ice skating is still a new and not yet widely popular sport in Vietnam, such progress shows great potential if properly invested and has a long-term development strategy.

With her impressive achievements, Bao Chi is gradually becoming a representative face of the generation of dynamic, brave and enthusiastic young athletes of Vietnam. Experts assess that if she continues to maintain her spirit of learning, persevere in training and is invested in the right direction, she can absolutely go further in international arenas such as the world championship or even the Youth Olympics.

In a competitive playing field, Nguyen Hoang Bao Chi's victory is the result of her relentless efforts. And more than the medals, it is her sportsmanship, belief and will to conquer that has strongly inspired the Vietnamese sports community.

The tournament in India has ended, but this young athlete's journey to the top continues, promising to open up a bright future for Vietnamese speed skating on the continental sports map.
