Lychee in major growing areas such as Bac Giang , Hai Duong, and Hung Yen is in the main harvest season. Retail prices range from VND20,000 to over VND200,000/kg. In addition to domestic supply, recently, seedless lychees imported from China have appeared on the market.

Some fruit shops in Hanoi are introducing seedless lychees from China, selling for 1.1-1.6 million VND/2kg basket, equivalent to 550,000-800,000 VND/kg. This price is 1.5-2 times higher than Vietnamese seedless lychees, 3-5 times higher than famous Vietnamese export lychees such as Phu Cu egg lychees (Hung Yen), Luc Ngan red lychees (Bac Giang), Thanh Ha export lychees (Hai Duong)...

A representative of an imported fruit store on Thuy Khue Street (Tay Ho District, Hanoi) said that in addition to Bac Giang lychees, this year the store also sells seedless lychees imported from China. According to the introduction, this lychee variety is bred and grown in Hainan Province (China).

"The product is sold in 2kg baskets, with gel ice inside to help preserve the lychee fruit for a long time, retail price 1.1 million VND. Customers must order in advance because it is hand-carried goods, the price is high so the store does not import in advance. This is the first year the store has sold, the number of customers ordering since opening until now is about more than 50 orders", said a representative of this store.

Similarly, a store specializing in imported fruits in Dong Da district, Hanoi, has also imported seedless lychees from China to sell since the beginning of the month at a price of VND650,000/kg. "These seedless lychees are mainly grown for export to Japan, so they are expensive. Currently, the store still has them in stock, most customers buy a small amount to try or give as gifts," said Ms. Thuy, a representative of the store.

Selling Chinese seedless lychees for 1.15 million VND/2kg, Ms. Nguyen Tam (Thanh Xuan district, Hanoi) said that this is a lychee variety originating from Hainan Island (China), officially imported to Vietnam by her company.

Many sellers say this is the only seedless lychee variety in the world , researched, bred and grown on China's Hainan Island (Photo: Tam Nguyen).

According to Ms. Tam, lychee has a fragrant, juicy, sweet taste, the flesh is clear like jelly, has no seeds and does not cause a hot feeling. Although it is an expensive type of lychee, the first shipment to Vietnam on June 10 was sold out.

She said she is still actively selling Vietnamese lychees because Vietnamese lychees have their own position and customer base, and she is not worried about imported lychees competing and losing market share. Imported lychees are expensive for those who like to experience. Many customers who have bought them come back to order more to give as gifts to relatives.

After buying more than 1kg of Chinese seedless lychees for 1.2 million VND to try, Ms. Hai Anh (Dong Da district, Hanoi) felt quite disappointed. "Many fruits taste sour, even astringent, not as delicious as domestic lychees," Ms. Hai Anh shared.

In Vietnam, in 2019, Bac Giang also brought seedless lychee varieties to plant in Tan Son commune (Luc Ngan district) with more than 500 trees. After more than 2 years of planting, some lychee trees have flowered and fruited.

As a result, the lychee fruit is large, has beautiful color, thick flesh and a very characteristic sweet and crunchy taste. In particular, the seedless fruit when grown purely still has some very small, flat seeds due to cross-pollination. In the 2022 lychee crop, the seedless lychee has produced fruit and achieved good quality.

In Thanh Hoa, in 2023, after 4 years of trial planting in Ngoc Lac district, Ho Guom - Song Am High-Tech Agriculture Company Limited under Ho Guom Group also harvested 27 hectares of seedless lychee.

This lychee variety was bred by the company in cooperation with the Vietnam Genetics Institute and cultivated using organic methods at the Ho Guom - Song Am farm. Currently, on the market, the price of seedless lychee grown by Vietnamese enterprises is about 400,000-550,000 VND/kg.

According to a report by the Department of Industry and Trade of Bac Giang, as of June 13, the province had harvested and consumed about 54,000 tons of lychee; of which early lychee output reached 50,000 tons and main-season lychee output was about 4,000 tons.
