On August 4, the Ukrainian General Staff confirmed that the country's military had destroyed a Russian S-300 surface-to-air missile system in the Moscow-controlled area of Zaporizhzhia region.

According to the Kyiv Independent, the S-300 system is a long-range surface-to-air missile system capable of intercepting aircraft, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles. Developed during the Soviet era, the S-300 remains a key component of Russia's air defense system. Depending on the version, the S-300 can simultaneously attack multiple targets with a range of up to 150 km.

According to the Ukrainian General Staff, the destruction of the S-300 system is considered a major blow to Russia's long-range strike capabilities, reducing Moscow's ability to target military positions and other infrastructure in the region.

"Ukrainian forces continue to systematically destroy key elements of Russia's military capabilities, thereby weakening its ability to conduct combat operations and maintain control over occupied territories," the statement said.

According to the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), on the night of August 3 and early morning of August 4, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) controlled by this force attacked an airbase in the city of Saky in the Crimean peninsula. The attack is said to have destroyed and damaged five Russian fighter jets.

According to the SBU, during the mission called Special Operations Center “A”, Ukrainian UAVs destroyed one Su-30SM, damaged another, and hit three Su-24s and an aviation weapons depot.

The Saky air base plays a key role in Russia’s military operations in the Black Sea. According to the SBU, the damage from the attack was assessed as “significant”, with a single Su-30SM valued at between $35 and $50 million.

“The successful special operation in Saky is another step in the efforts to weaken the enemy’s ability to wage war against Ukraine,” the SBU said. Russia has not yet made any official comments on the attack, as Ukraine has claimed.

On the same day, August 4, the Ukrainian General Staff announced that its UAVs had successfully attacked a fuel depot at the airport in the Russian resort city of Sochi on August 3. “A large fire broke out in the area of this facility. It is known that the Russian air force is also stationed at this airport,” the statement said.

Several videos posted on social media, said to be taken from the window of a plane landing at Sochi airport, show the fuel depot burning fiercely below.

Crimean Wind Telegram channel reported on August 3 that Sochi airport has imposed refueling restrictions following the attack on the tank, forcing some flights departing from here to land at other airports to refuel.

The drone attack is part of a Ukrainian campaign targeting Russia's energy infrastructure – a sector seen as essential to Moscow's efforts to sustain the war.
