For many years, Japanese girls have always been considered a phenomenon in the world of women's volleyball. This is because they are not tall but always make everyone look up.
At the 2025 World Championship, the Japanese women's volleyball team continued to shock the volleyball world, when they summoned a "super short" team.
The average height of the 14 Japanese girls competing in this year's Women's Volleyball World Championship is only 174.1cm. This is a very low number for a volleyball team, even for women.
Japan is lower than all the teams participating in this year's world tournament, including three other Asian teams: China, Vietnam and Thailand.
There is no need to talk about China as they have always been among the tallest teams in the world (average height of the women's team is nearly 190cm) for many years. Even Thailand and Vietnam are taller than Japan.
After Bich Tuyen withdrew, the average height of the Vietnamese women's volleyball team is still 176.8cm, nearly 3cm taller than Japan. If Bich Tuyen were there, this number would be nearly 178cm.
As for the host Thailand, their average height is also 177cm. These are rare teams with an average height under 180cm. While most Western teams have an average height over 185cm.

There are no official statistics for this year's tournament, but in major tournaments like VNL or the world tournament in recent years, the average height of the entire tournament is usually around 182-184cm.
That means the current Japanese women's volleyball team is about 1 inch (10cm) shorter than the average height of other strong teams.
Japan doesn't have any stars who are 190cm tall. At the same time, they only have 2 people at 185cm, and 3 liberos are over 160cm tall in the squad.
The modest height of the Japanese women's team has long been an interesting topic in volleyball. Many experts point out that the Japanese have cleverly taken advantage of short players to improve their defensive ability.
This is considered a special development strategy of the Japanese, when they do not pursue height development but try to recruit girls with outstanding height into the volleyball team.
With their short stature, Japanese players obviously do not possess the powerful flying shots of Western teams. However, flexible movements, unique tactics and especially super durable defense - are the strengths of the "super short" Japanese women's team in the world volleyball arena.
